The Ongoing Fight to Eradicate Tuberculosis Amidst Diagnostic Hurdles

In 2022, tuberculosis (TB) continued to pose a significant global health challenge, with an estimated 10.6 million new infections and 1.3 million deaths reported by the World Health Organization. TB, caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis, is highly contagious, spreading through the air when infected individuals cough, sneeze, or spit. Despite advancements in testing and treatment, a critical hurdle remains: identifying the estimated 3 million people who are infected but undiagnosed.
Dr. Adithya Cattamanchi, a renowned pulmonologist at UCI Health and a professor at the UCI School of Medicine, highlights the disparity between the actual number of TB cases and those diagnosed. His research and clinical work, which includes nearly 200 peer-reviewed publications, focus on improving TB diagnosis and treatment strategies to facilitate early detection and reduce transmission. Cattamanchi's efforts underscore the ongoing need for innovative diagnostic and screening methods to bridge the gap in TB care and control.
