Vehicle Fire in Irvine: Driver in Stable Condition After Rescue

Early morning on April 27, OCFA firefighters responded to an incident in Irvine where a vehicle had collided with a light standard and caught fire. The team quickly extinguished the flames and provided immediate medical care to the driver. The victim was then transported to a local trauma center in stable condition.
Traffic Update: Ongoing Repaving on Main Street from Culver to San Diego Creek

Main Street from Culver Drive to San Diego Creek Channel will undergo repaving from April 30 to mid-June, weather permitting. Work hours are Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. One lane will remain open in each direction, but delays are expected. The project aims to maintain access to residences and businesses and minimize disruptions. The new asphalt is expected to last 20 years with proper maintenance. Irvine Celebrates Older Americans Month and Invites Seniors to Free Events Throughout May

Celebrate Older Americans Month in Irvine this May! Adults aged 50+ can enjoy free events and programs all month long, with the chance to earn entries for a drawing by participating. UCI Health Experts Share Top Foods to Combat Stress and Enhance Well-being

Eating foods that reduce stress and anxiety is essential for maintaining good mental and physical health. According to Katie Rankell, a registered dietitian and director of the UCI Health Weight Management Program, incorporating whole foods like fiber-rich grains, fruits, vegetables, and fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids can significantly mitigate stress responses. Jessica VanRoo, executive chef at the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute, has created stress-busting recipes such as Spring Pea Soup with Mint, Crunchy Baked Fish with Lemony Couscous, and Angel Food Cake with Raspberry Drizzle. Fostering Creativity: Learn How Irvine's Art Director Inspires Young Artists

Erin Zoumaras, director of Irvine Unified School District's art program, is dedicated to fostering creativity in children. Having taken on her role in July after being a coordinator, she oversees a successful art program evidenced by numerous student achievements, such as 250 IUSD students being selected for the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association Honor Groups. Raised in rural Missouri with a lifelong passion for music, Zoumaras is committed to enhancing arts education, supported by organizations like Irvine Company and Irvine Public Schools Foundation. She also focuses on parental involvement and continuous recruitment of skilled instructors. Additionally, Zoumaras offers five tips for nurturing creativity in children, emphasizing regular engagement in artistic activities, enrolling in arts classes, experiencing art in the community, discussing art with children without judgment, and fostering an environment free from criticism.

UC Irvine's Rei Harashima Tied for First After Second Round at Big West Men's Golf Championship

UC Irvine's sophomore Rei Harashima is tied for first at the 2024 Big West Men's Golf Championship with a 36-hole score of 8-under 136, maintaining consistent performance with back-to-back 68s. He competes closely with Cal State Fullerton's Tegan Andrews. UC Irvine remains fourth in team standings, trailing the leader, Long Beach State, by 13 strokes as they head into the final round at La Quinta Country Club.
Five UC Irvine Volleyball Players Earn All-America Honors

Five UC Irvine men's volleyball players—Hilir Henno, Brett Sheward, Cole Power, Connor Campbell, and Maxim Grigoriev—received All-America honors from the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Henno earned first team honors for the second year, ranking second nationally in points and kills. Sheward and Power were named to the second team, with Sheward ranking second nationally in set assists. Campbell and Grigoriev received honorable mentions, with Campbell ranking 11th nationally in blocks and Grigoriev leading the Big West in hitting percentage against league opponents. UC Irvine is set to face Penn State in the NCAA Championship's opening round.

Irvine Valley's Brandlin and Fowler Win Orange Empire Conference Beach Volleyball Title

Irvine Valley College's women's beach volleyball pair, Natalia Brandlin and Audrey Fowler, won the Orange Empire Conference individual title. They defeated teammates Tessa Marocco and Kenzie Dews in the final, finishing with scores of 18-21, 21-14, 15-10. The event saw three Irvine Valley pairs qualify for the Southern California Regionals: champions Brandlin and Fowler, runners-up Marocco and Dews, and Avery Bennett with Mia Bertolone. A total of nine pairs from various colleges advanced to the regional competition at El Camino College, including teams from Golden West, Cypress, and Orange Coast. Irvine Valley's next match is in the 3C2A So. Cal. Team Regionals at El Camino, facing El Camino and Long Beach City.

Crean Lutheran Girls Dominate Empire League Track and Field Championships

Crean Lutheran High School's girls track and field team won the Empire League title with an undefeated season and success at the finals, as stated by Coach Robby Cherry. Eliza Wooden, named league MVP, contributed significantly with wins in the 200m, 400m, and 4x400m relay. The team secured 13 individual titles across various events. Key victories included Elina Oh in the 100m and 4x100m relay, Reese Hogan in the high jump, Jane Hewitt in the long jump, and Joelle Yen in the triple jump. The boys team also performed well, securing runner-up in the league with individual wins in hurdles, long jump, and pole vault.
