Unlocking the Body's Rhythm: How UC Irvine's Research Could Revolutionize Cancer Treatment
A research team at UC Irvine discovered that leveraging the circadian clock can enhance the efficacy of checkpoint inhibitor cancer therapy. Published in Nature Immunology, the study shows that timing immunotherapy based on an individual's circadian patterns improves treatment outcomes. The team found that circadian disruption promotes cancer by increasing inflammation and immunosuppressive cells. Using single-cell RNA sequencing in colorectal cancer models, they identified that targeting therapy when these cells are most abundant enhances its effectiveness. This breakthrough suggests personalized treatment strategies could be developed by aligning with the body's natural rhythms.

Stay Safe: Essential Wildfire Preparedness Tips for Orange County Residents
Over the past 20 years, Orange County has experienced a rise in destructive wildfires affecting communities and natural landscapes. The Irvine Ranch Conservancy, OC Parks, the City of Irvine, the City of Newport Beach, and the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) are collaborating to protect resources. Key wildfire safety measures include:
staying alert during Red Flag Warnings
reporting threats to 911
reducing home wildfire hazards using OCFA's survey
managing vegetation
knowing evacuation protocols
preparing a household fire plan and a go-bag with supplies for at least 72 hours
While not all wildfires can be prevented, increased awareness and preparedness help mitigate risks, with IRC and partners actively monitoring and minimizing fire dangers.
