Lower Cholesterol and Weight: Vegan Diet Outperforms Mediterranean in Recent Study
A recent study from Stanford Medicine compared vegan and Mediterranean diets for heart health, focusing on cholesterol, insulin, and weight. Following a vegan diet for eight weeks led to lower LDL cholesterol, weight loss, and a 20% reduction in blood insulin levels. Both diets, rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes, are favored by cardiologists. Dr. Ailin Barseghian El-Farra from UCI Health highlights the benefits of a vegan diet's high fiber and low saturated fat, while noting the need for vegans to monitor nutrients like B12, calcium, and iron. The Mediterranean diet, rich in omega-3s from fish, has also shown significant reductions in cardiovascular risk factors and mortality rates. Ultimately, choosing a diet that is sustainable and heart-healthy is most important and will naturally depend on individualsโ needs and preferences.

How to Help Baby Birds: A Quick Guide for Nestlings and Fledglings
Spotted a baby bird on the ground? Don't panic!
For nestlings (3-13 days old), gently return them to the nest or create a temporary one with leaves, twigs, and soft fabric if the nest is gone. Keep them warm with a towel but donโt feed or water them.
Fledglings (feathered but can't fly well) should be left alone as the parent is likely nearby. Only move them if in immediate danger. If the fledgling appears injured, contact Irvine Animal Services at (949) 724-7092. Let's help our feathered friends find their way home.
