Protect Your Home This Season From Mosquitos Amid Warming Temperatures and Standing Water

Due to heavy rainfall in Irvine and Orange County, standing water is increasing mosquito breeding risks, particularly from invasive Aedes aegypti mosquitoes known as "ankle biters." As temperatures rise, these conditions may lead to a severe mosquito season. During California Mosquito Awareness Week, the Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District recommends:
eliminating standing water sources
installing and maintaining window and door screens
repairing leaks
cleaning gutters
reporting neglected pools
using EPA-registered insect repellents,
wearing protective clothing during peak mosquito hours, dusk and dawn.
For more prevention tips and to sign up for mosquito alerts, visit www.ocvector.org.
UC Irvine Celebrates Four New AAAS Fellows in Diverse Scientific Fields

Four researchers from UC Irvine, active in computational chemistry, statistical methods, particle physics, and inorganic chemistry, have been named fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Vice Chancellor Pramod Khargonekar praised their contributions, which have enhanced UC Irvine's global reputation. The 2024 fellows are Filipp Furche, Daniel Gillen, Timothy Tait, and Jenny Yang, recognized for their significant advancements in their respective fields. This year, 502 professionals were honored as AAAS fellows and will be celebrated at a forum in Washington, D.C., on September 21, which coincides with the 150th anniversary of the fellows program. UC Irvine now has 207 AAAS fellows.
Don’t Miss Coppélia: A Family-Friendly Ballet About Love, Dolls, and Mischief

Coppélia, a beloved comic ballet, will be performed at The Irvine Barclay Theatre on April 27 and 28. The story, set in a small European village, revolves around an eccentric inventor, Doctor Coppélius, and his lifelike doll. The plot thickens when Franz, a local villager, becomes enamored with the doll, believing it to be a real girl, while his fiancée, Swanhilda, uncovers the truth and teaches Franz a lesson in love and reality. This production features the vibrant choreography of Artistic Director Salwa Rizkalla, inspired by Arthur Saint-Léon, and stars Katherine Barkman and Esteban Hernandez from the San Francisco Ballet.

Trailing 6-3 in the ninth, the team rallied with key plays, including a Will Bermudez single, a Chase Call RBI double, and a critical hit by pitch to Abraham Garcia-Pacheco. The game was tied with a deep sacrifice fly and then won in the tenth inning with a hit from Jo Oyama. This win secures UC Irvine's 28th victory of the season and ensures a winning season, continuing the success under head coach Ben Orloff, who achieved his 186th career win, moving to second place in UC Irvine coaching history. The team's strong defensive plays and strategic pitching were crucial in overcoming early deficits and securing the win. The upcoming week includes road games, starting with UCLA.
