Post-Holiday Cleanup: Convenient Christmas Tree Recycling Services
Waste Management will pick up and recycle Christmas trees for three weeks post-Christmas on regular collection days. Trees over 4 feet should be halved and stripped of all decorations. Place them curbside. Flocked trees are collected but not recycled. Alternatively, recycle at Sunset Environmental, 16122 Construction Circle West, Irvine, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Join a 9-mile hike in Bommer & Shady Canyons on January 16th, starting from Cattle Camp to Butterfly Valley. The hike includes a steep ascent, a traverse across Serrano Ridge, and a descent into Shady Canyon, featuring mature Coastal Sage Scrub. Total elevation gain is 1500 feet, at an average pace of 2.5 mph. Essential gear includes water, snacks, sturdy shoes, sunscreen, and first aid. Pre-registration is mandatory. The hike is rated level-4 in difficulty.

Joyful End to the Year at Local Shelter with Over Two Dozen Adoptions

UC Irvine Women's Basketball Dominates Cal State Bakersfield in Big West Home Opener, 71-48
UC Irvine's women's basketball team defeated Cal State Bakersfield 71-48 in their Big West home opener. The Anteaters showcased impressive shooting, hitting 53% from the field and 7-of-16 three-pointers, while dominating rebounds 37-19. The game was initially close, but UCI pulled ahead in the second half, outscoring CSUB 38-18. Key players included Dรฉja Lee with 22 points, Moulayna Johnson Sidi Baba with 13 points and 9 rebounds, and significant contributions from the bench. Cal State Bakersfield struggled with a 36% shooting rate. UCI's next games are against Cal State Fullerton and UC Davis.
UC Irvine Announces Dynamic Roster for 2024 Womenโs Indoor Track & Field Season
The UC Irvine women's indoor track & field team is preparing for the 2024 season, starting with the Spokane Indoor Challenge on Jan. 12-13. They have a mix of experienced athletes and promising newcomers across various events. Key athletes include Deandra Tyler in throws, Sameen Andar in distance events, and Aryel Coats in sprints. The team also boasts strong contenders in hurdles, relays, multis, and jumps, with notable performances expected from newcomers like Kailah McKenzie. Their season includes several meets, culminating in the MPSF Championships in February, with hopes of qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships in March. Coach Jeff Perkins emphasizes the team's talent and potential for breaking records.

Irvine Valley's men's basketball team, coached by Jerry Hernandez, hosted an alumni exhibition game against the current 2023-24 Laser team at Hart Gymnasium, featuring many former star players. The event was a great success, and photos of the game are available here.

Score for Charity: High School Teams Compete in Fundraiser for CHOC
The Freeway League teams are hosting the Challenge for Choc Showcase on Jan. 6 at Sonora and Sunny Hills High Schools to benefit the Childrenโs Hospital of Orange County. The event features boys and girls high school basketball games at both locations. Spectators will use a QR Code for admission, with proceeds going to CHOC. The schedule includes various matchups throughout the day at both schools.

A wallet was stolen from a woman's purse at the Spectrum Carousel in Irvine in November. Irvine PD continues to seek help to identify the suspects; contact [email protected]. Tips for avoiding such thefts: maintain distance from strangers, keep purses closed, and don't leave purses in shopping carts.
