A Beacon of Hope: Orange County's FPU Leads the Charge Against Family Violence

The Family Protection Unit (FPU) focuses on prosecuting severe cases of domestic violence, child abuse, child abduction, and elder abuse to protect victims who are often unable to defend themselves. Research indicates that children from abusive homes are at risk of becoming violent, struggling with self-control and self-esteem, performing poorly in school, and potentially engaging in criminal activities later in life. The unit aims to interrupt this cycle of violence.

Protecting Your Pets and Property from Coyotes: Essential Tips for Irvine Homeowners

Coyote mating season in Orange County runs from January to March which raises concerns among Irvine residents about increased sightings and pet safety. Coyotes, adept at urban living, pose a risk to small pets but generally avoid human conflict. To mitigate risks, residents are advised as follows:

  • Do not feed coyotes.

  • Fully enclose animal enclosures.

  • Keep cats and small dogs indoors or under close adult supervision.

  • Feed pets indoors.

  • Use heavy-duty containers with secure lids for trash.

  • Clear yards of potential shelter and food sources like brush, wood piles, and fallen fruit.

  • Enclose the bottoms of porches and decks.

  • Eliminate standing water.

  • Keep properties well-lit at night.

  • Put trash out only on the morning of pickup.

  • Consider motion-sensitive sprinklers for high-concern areas.

  • Supervise small children closely.

  • Increase distance if a coyote behaves aggressively, indicating you're too close to its territory or family.

  • Teach children to avoid and not feed strange animals.

  • Understand that eradication or relocation of coyotes is ineffective and can lead to larger populations.
