UCI's Revolutionary Technology Mimics Octopus Camouflage, Opens New Doors in Robotics and Military

Researchers at the University of California, Irvine, inspired by the color-changing abilities of the greater blue-ringed octopus, have developed a new technology that mimics this capability. This technology, suitable for military, medical, robotics, and sustainable energy applications, features dynamic fluorescent and spectroscopic properties, is easy to manufacture, and can scale up to cover large surfaces. The innovation involves a thin film with a design similar to the octopus's skin, using specially designed molecules for durability and self-repair. The study, funded by various agencies including the Office of Naval Research and the National Science Foundation, has been published in Nature Communications.

Wake Up Refreshed: How REM Sleep Enhances Your Mental Health and Immunity

REM sleep is crucial for health, playing a key role in processing emotions and consolidating memories. Dr. Rami N. Khayat, a sleep medicine expert, explains that REM sleep, characterized by rapid eye movement, is essential for waking up refreshed and maintaining mental health and a strong immune system. The amount of REM sleep varies with age, with fetuses and newborns experiencing the most.
Adults should aim for 7-9 hours of sleep, with about 20-25% in REM.
Factors like genetics, lifestyle, and medication can affect REM sleep quality.
Avoiding substances like alcohol and caffeine before bed can improve REM sleep.
