UC Irvine Scientists Uncover Enzymes Key to Cancer Mutation, Paving Way for Targeted Treatments

Researchers at the University of California, Irvine have discovered that the enzymes APOBEC3A and APOBEC3B play a crucial role in causing mutations in cancer by altering DNA in tumor genomes. This finding, published in Nature Communications, highlights a new potential target for cancer treatment strategies. The study shows these enzymes modify DNA in specific ways, leading to mutations that can contribute to cancer progression, drug resistance, and metastasis. By understanding the distinct mutations caused by each enzyme, researchers aim to develop therapies to prevent these mutations. The team, including members from UCI, Harvard, USC, UT San Antonio, and the University of Minnesota, used innovative methods to distinguish the DNA sequences affected by each enzyme, paving the way for targeted cancer treatments. This research is supported by various grants, including from the NIH, CIRM, EMBO, CPRIT, and the National Cancer Institute, and utilizes UCI's Genomics Research and Technology Hub.
Irvine Secures New Waste Management Contract, Promises Lower Rates and Enhanced Services

Rates will stay low until July 1, 2025, keeping Irvine's fees among the lowest in Orange County. Compostable and paper bags can now be used in green recycling carts. Andy Nguyen, a freshman at UC Irvine, was named The Big West Men's Tennis Player of the Week for his role in the team's 4-3 victory over Gonzaga. Nguyen's win at No. 4 singles contributed to his team's lead and marked his third straight-set win in recent matches, bringing his season record to 7-3. The team is set to begin Big West play against UC Davis.
Anteaters Clinch Thrilling 10-9 Victory Over LMU in Nail-Biting 11th Inning Finish

In a thrilling 11th inning finish, the Anteaters secured a 10-9 victory over LMU at Page Stadium, highlighted by a game-saving play at home plate. Despite LMU's comeback efforts, including a near-tie in the 11th inning, the Anteaters' defense held strong. UCI led early and faced multiple ties, but key hits and strategic plays, including a two-run homer by Jo Oyama and a go-ahead double by Anthony Martinez, kept them ahead. The game saw contributions from 11 pitchers, with standout performances by David Vizcaino and Michael Pirrello, the latter earning his second win. Dante Zamudio marked his Division I debut with a save. The match, lasting over four hours, was UCI's longest since 2022. With this win, improving to 19-3, UCI now looks forward to a series in Hawai'i.

Irvine Police Crack Down on Teen Shoplifting Spree, Recover $3,000 in Stolen Goods

On March 22 around 3 p.m., Irvine Police Department (IPD) officers, monitoring shopping centers for organized distraction thefts, observed a suspicious group near HomeGoods. This group, consisting of two males and two females, attempted to conceal their vehicle's license plate before heading to the Irvine Spectrum, where they were stopped by the police. A search revealed a stolen wallet and a device for decoding credit card information. The wallet's owner had lost it at HomeGoods, but her credit cards remained unused. Surveillance footage showed the group's failed attempt to steal another wallet. The individuals, identified as Maria Beltran (52), Thonson Yeamier Gomezbarreto (32), Laidy Viviana Moraleon (36), and William Alberto Melomontenegro (38), were arrested for burglary, conspiracy, grand theft, and possessing identity theft tools.
