The Jeans You Wear Today Could Send a Powerful Message

Denim Day, held on April 24th, is a movement that began in 1997 in Italy after a court acquitted a rapist because the 18-year-old victim wore tight jeans, suggesting she consented as she had to assist in removing them. This ruling sparked outrage among the women in the Italian Parliament, who protested by wearing jeans. The day emphasizes that clothing is never an invitation to rape, under the slogan "There is NO excuse and NEVER an invitation to rape." Wear denim to participate and spread awareness.

Are You Ready for the Summer Sun? Irvine PTA's Essential Warm Weather Safety Tips

Sunscreen: Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher daily, reapplying every two hours, to shield against UV rays.
Time Your Outings: Avoid the sun between 10 AM and 4 PM to minimize exposure during peak UV hours. Seek shade under trees, umbrellas, or buildings to protect against sunburn and heat-related issues.
Choose the Right Clothes: Opt for lightweight, long-sleeved shirts, pants, and wide-brimmed hats. Select clothing with a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) for additional protection.

Discover How Orange County's Native Plant Fringepod Flourishes Despite Invasive Species Threats

Orange County features a native plant called Fringepod (Thysanocarpus), part of the mustard family, crucial to the area's natural ecosystem. This annual plant grows up to 23 inches tall, with smooth or toothed leaves, and blooms with white or purple flowers each spring, producing distinctive wing-like fruit. The Irvine Ranch Conservancy actively combats non-native species to protect such native plants. More details are available on their blog.

UC Irvine Baseball Overcomes UCLA 9-7 with Ninth-Inning Comeback

UC Irvine secured a dramatic 9-7 victory over UCLA with a ninth-inning, three-run homer by Chase Call at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The game was intense, featuring multiple lead changes and ties. UCLA initially led, but UC Irvine fought back several times, culminating in Call's game-winning home run. Myles Smith notably contributed with four hits, including three doubles. The win, marked by timely hitting and strong finishes from the pitchers, especially David Utagawa with his crucial ninth-inning saves, brings UC Irvine's record to 29-8. They next face UC Riverside on April 26. Coach Ben Orloff praised the team's resilience and belief in their ability to win under pressure.
Hilir Henno: UC Irvine's First to Clinch Top Honor in Big West Player of the Year Selection

UC Irvine's Hilir Henno has been awarded the Big West Player of the Year, a first for an Anteater to win this top conference honor. He joins two other UCI players who have been similarly honored in different conferences. Henno, an outside hitter, leads the nation with an average of 5.51 points per set and is among the top in several other stats, including kills, aces, hitting percentage, and digs. In Irvine, a man left a cart filled with his belongings in the lobby of a storage facility near Jamboree and Warner. Upon his return, he discovered that the cart and items were missing. An Irvine PD officer responded, reviewed surveillance footage, and identified another customer who had taken the cart and moved the stolen items to their car and storage unit. The officer then located and arrested the 41-year-old suspect from Mission Viejo on charges of burglary and narcotics possession.
