UC Irvine Students and Faculty Targeted in Disturbing Discord Hack; Federal Investigation Underway

Hackers recently attacked UC Irvine's Discord groups, exposing 3,000 users to graphic videos, causing hospitalizations and distress. The student-led response team, coordinated by Alina Kim, managed to block the hackers, who demanded a $1,000 ransom. Federal authorities and campus police are investigating. The university, while not managing these Discord groups, emphasizes cybersecurity and offers mental health support. The attack affected about 30 of 500 groups, with some being taken offline or rebuilt. A Discord bot was developed by a student to ban the hackers across all groups, and the attackers' IDs were obtained for a widespread ban.
