Strokestra: The Symphony of Recovery - A New Chapter in Music Medicine at UCI

Strokestra, a "music medicine" initiative by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, made its West Coast debut to aid stroke survivors in regaining movement, enhancing social interactions, and boosting confidence. Dr. Lisa A. Gibbs from UCI School of Medicine highlighted the program's success in engaging patients in new ways.

  • The program, blending music with therapy, involved stroke survivors, caregivers, and UCI music students in a collaborative workshop that not only fostered physical movement but also joy and community among participants.

  • UCI Health is considering adopting this innovative approach to rehabilitation, inspired by the positive impact of music on health.

  • The initiative, which includes interactive sessions and encourages participants to explore music in everyday settings, has been praised for its therapeutic benefits and potential to relieve caregiver stress.

Step into the Wild: Unraveling the Mysteries of Animal Gaits and Tracks

Dive into the intriguing realm of animal tracks and discover the silent stories left behind by our planet's diverse wildlife. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a budding biologist, or simply curious about the natural world around you, learning about animal tracks offers a unique perspective on the behaviors and movements of animals in their natural habitats.

Animals exhibit distinct walking gaits that vary with speed.

  • Initially, they walk by moving legs on one side of their body, then the other, creating a direct line of tracks (1-2-3-4 pattern).

  • As speed increases, they shift to a trot, moving diagonal legs together, narrowing the trail and changing the track pattern to 1-2-1-2.

  • For higher speeds, they adopt a lope or gallop, introducing significant spaces between track sets, with lopes showing varied track sequences (1-2-3-4 or 1-2/3-4) and gallops characterized by a sequence of front feet followed by hind feet, creating a more spaced and distinct pattern.
