Irvine Opens Three Vote Centers with Drive-Thru Option; More to Follow

Irvine has three Vote Centers open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.:

  1. Irvine City Hall (with drive-thru ballot drop-off)

  2. Los Olivos Community Center

  3. Portola Springs Community Center

Twelve more centers open on March 2 with extended hours. For more details on locations, hours, and Measure D, visit cityofirvine.org/election.

Irvine's Great Park Enters New Development Phase with Upcoming Demolition

The next phase of demolition in the Great Park's Northern Sector, covering the Great Meadow and North and South Lakes, is starting. It involves removing utilities like water, sewer, and electrical systems. Demolition kicks off the week of March 4, with work scheduled on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and weekends from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., not affecting local neighborhoods or park activities. Five Irvine Schools Shine in Regional Science Olympiad, Advance to State Finals

Sierra Vista, Jeffery Trail, University, Portola, and Northwood High School Science Olympiad teams excelled at the 2024 OC Regional competition, advancing to the State Competition on April 6. They competed in events like cell biology and computer science. More info at iusd.org/ScienceOlympiad2024.

From High School Robotics to Life-Saving Surgeries: UCI Health's Unique Humanitarian Journey in Ecuador

Dr. Cristobal Barrios Jr. and volunteers from UCI Health, including medical professionals and a high school robotics team, provided medical aid to 3,750 patients in impoverished Ecuadorian villages. Sponsored by the nonprofit IMAHelps, the mission offered surgeries, dental care, and custom-made prosthetics to those in need, including a boy injured in a cement mixer accident. Barrios, who became IMAHelps' president in 2023, emphasizes the gratification and profound impact of these missions, which attract volunteers who cover their own expenses. The experience profoundly changes volunteers, highlighting the importance of serving others, regardless of location.

Wednesday Workout: Hit the Trail and Treat Yourself at Woodbury Town Center

Run OC is hosting a 4-mile run with some push-ups after on the Jeffrey Trail, Wednesday 2/28 at 6pm. Dinner afterward will be at Woodbury Town Center, Irvine, with options like Shin-Sen-Gumi, Chipotle, and more. Everyone is welcome to join!

Classic Meets Contemporary: UCI Symphony Orchestra Showcases Concerto Competition Winners at Irvine Barclay

The UCI Symphony Orchestra will perform at the Irvine Barclay Theatre on March 7, featuring orchestral classics and highlighting two winners of the 2024 UCI Concerto Competition.

  • Attendees can join Maestro Pope for a Pre-Concert Conversation at 7 p.m.

  • The program includes works by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Louis Spohr, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and Ludwig van Beethoven.

  • Guest performers include Dennis Kim, Aizehi Nomo, Qifan Zhang, and Matthew Yee. T

UC Irvine Ranks 14th After First Day of Golf Invitational; Ryoo Leads Team

UC Irvine is in 14th place at the GCU Invitational after scoring two rounds of 298. Junior Charlotte Ryoo leads the team, tied for 24th with a score of 145, including seven birdies. Sophomores Kiana Briggs and Alyson Sor are tied for 52nd at 149, while Jasmine Chen and Megan Yang are in 92nd and 108th places, respectively. The tournament ends on the 28th with the final 18 holes starting at 8 a.m.

UC Irvine Bolsters Women's Soccer Team with Power 5 Transfer Kaitlyn Paculba

UC Irvine women's soccer welcomes Power 5 transfer Kaitlyn Paculba from the University of Oregon, where she played 47 matches and scored 10 points over three seasons. Excited for her new journey, Paculba, a 5-5 forward and Orange County native, brings experience and a competitive edge to the Anteaters. With a background in soccer and track & field from Marina High School and success in club soccer, including leading LAFC Slammers in scoring and winning an Elite Clubs National Championship, she's set to contribute to UC Irvine's attack. The team, aiming to defend their Big West title and make another NCAA Tournament run in 2024, expects Paculba to quickly integrate and bolster their forward line.

Athlete of the Week: Emily Freeman's Key Role in Irvine Valley's Basketball Triumph

Emily Freeman, a sophomore guard from Irvine Valley College (IVC), was named athlete of the week for her performance on Feb. 26, contributing seven assists in a 77-72 comeback win against Riverside. This victory improved IVC's record to 21-7, securing the seventh seed in the So. Cal. Regional Playoffs. Freeman averages 9.1 points, 3.2 assists, and 1.4 steals per game, marking her second year as a starter for the Lasers, who finished second in the Orange Empire Conference.

In Irvine, Spectrum officers arrested a driver found with crack cocaine and fraudulent credit cards, and a passenger with over 200 unauthorized gift and credit cards, both facing fraud and narcotics charges.
