Irvine Ranked Among Top 3 Best U.S. Cities for Raising Families
Irvine ranks among the top three cities to raise a family in the U.S., as per a recent WalletHub report. The city excelled in housing affordability, school quality, and healthcare. Analyst Cassandra Happe emphasized the balance between cost of living, education, safety, and recreation. Los Angeles ranked 85th, while San Diego and San Francisco also made the top 15. Irvine boasts the 20th-lowest property crime rate and the third-lowest divorce rate in the country. Additionally, it has a high share of families with children, highlighted by an 11-year-old graduating from Irvine Valley College.
Recycled Water Pipeline Break Disrupts Traffic on Newport Coast Drive and San Joaquin Hills Road
A recycled water pipeline burst at 3:32 a.m. Wednesday, closing the intersection of Newport Beach at San Joaquin Road. Initially, northbound Newport Coast Drive and westbound San Joaquin Hills were closed, but one lane on Newport Coast Drive has since reopened, while San Joaquin Hills remains closed. The water caused significant damage, including buckling a portion of San Joaquin Hills Road. Paulus Engineering crews are repairing the 20-inch Irvine Ranch Water District pipe, and asphalt restoration will follow. The city of Newport Beach is supporting the IRWD in these efforts.

Traffic Advisory: Jamboree Road Closures Scheduled for May 31 - June 1
Jamboree Road will have closures from Friday, May 31, at 10 p.m. to Saturday, June 1, at 7 a.m. for pavement rehabilitation. Southbound Jamboree Road on/offramps at Walnut and the intersection at Jamboree Road and Walnut Avenue will be closed. Detours will be available, but expect delays and consider alternate routes. Join the Adventure: Hike from Bommer Canyon to Butterfly Valley
Hikers are invited to join a 9-mile round trip hike through Bommer and Shady Canyons in the Irvine Open Space Preserve, starting at the historic Cattle Camp. The hike includes a steep ascent on the East Fork trail, crossing Serrano Ridge, and descending into Shady Canyon to the Butterfly Valley trail, showcasing mature Coastal Sage Scrub. With a 1500-foot elevation gain, the hike maintains an average pace of 2.5 mph. The hike is scheduled for Tuesday, June 11, from 7:30 am to 12:30 pm.

2024 Corvallis Regional: UC Irvine Joins Oregon State, Nicholls, and Tulane in NCAA Baseball Showdown
The Corvallis Regional features four teams competing at Goss Stadium in Oregon: Oregon State Beavers (42-14), UC Irvine Anteaters (43-12), Nicholls Colonels (38-20), and Tulane Green Wave (35-24). UC Irvine enters its 10th NCAA Regional, led by head coach Ben Orloff, with a strong away record and an offense setting new records. Pitcher Nick Pinto and hitters like Woody Hadeen and Myles Smith lead the team. Nicholls returns to the NCAA Regional with notable performances from Edgar Alvarez and Jacob Mayers. Oregon State, with standout Travis Bazzana, offers formidable pitching and hitting. Tulane, familiar with UCI, excels in offense and has a solid pitching staff. Games will be streamed on ESPN+ and KUCI, with live stats available.
UC Irvine’s Liam Miksic Sets New Javelin Record with 68.34m Throw
Junior Liam Miksic is the Sgt. Pepperoni’s Anteater of the Week for breaking the school record in men’s javelin at the NCAA West First Round in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Miksic threw over 64 meters in all attempts, achieving a personal and school record of 68.34m in the second round. The Big West champion finished 14th overall, narrowly missing nationals, marking his best NCAA performance to date, entering ranked 37th in the field.

Irvine Valley College Releases Fall 2024 Women's Soccer Schedule
Irvine Valley College's women's soccer team, led by Coach Tom Lancaster, has released their fall 2024 schedule. After a 5-16 record last season, they kick off with a scrimmage against Westcliff University, followed by a home opener against Pasadena City on August 23 at 3 p.m. Nonconference games include LA City, Cerritos, Victory Valley, Desert, East LA, and MiraCosta. Conference play starts on October 1 at Saddleback, with their first home conference match against Santa Ana on October 4 at 3 p.m.

Irvine Police Nab Suspect with Loaded Gun and Narcotics During Routine Traffic Stop
Officers from Spectrum stopped a vehicle on Saturday for traffic violations. The driver, Mathew Van, 19, of Santa Ana, appeared suspicious and was found to have stashed a loaded gun and narcotics before stopping. He was arrested on multiple felony charges and booked at Orange County Jail.
