Irvine Launches Project Delivery and Sustainability Department to Fast-Track Major City Projects

Irvine City has created a new Project Delivery and Sustainability Department to expedite long-delayed projects like solar parking lots, an Animal Care Center, and a pedestrian-bicycle overpass. This department, unique in Orange County, centralizes construction project management and reports directly to the City Manager. With 49 full-time staff, mostly project managers, it's led by Sean Crumby and Deputy Director Joel Belding. The department is pushing projects at an unprecedented rate, including Great Park development and city infrastructure upgrades like EV charging stations and new community facilities. City Manager Oliver Chi emphasizes this approach addresses Irvine's historical reliance on private developers for infrastructure and aims to strengthen the city's project management capabilities.

Safer Roads and Saved Life: December Dedicated as National Impaired Driving Prevention Month

In the U.S., 37 people die daily in drunk-driving accidents, equating to one death every 39 minutes. National Impaired Driving Prevention Month focuses on educating about the risks of driving while impaired and promotes measures like choosing a sober driver, using public transport, or rideshare services to enhance road safety.

UC Irvine Women's Basketball Continues Winning Streak with Close Call Against Denver

UC Irvine's women's basketball team maintained their unbeaten home record with a narrow 50-47 victory over Denver. Improving to 5-3 overall and 3-0 at home, the Anteaters overcame a slow start and a Denver lead in the third quarter, securing the win with strong defense and free-throw shooting. No player scored in double figures, but the team effort was highlighted by Amelia Scharpf and Nevaeh Parkinson leading the scoring with eight points each, and Parkinson also grabbing 11 rebounds. UCI shot 25% from the field but excelled at free throws (12-of-13) and defensively, holding Denver to under 30% shooting and forcing 21 turnovers. The win extends UCI's streak of holding opponents under 70 points to 43 games and marks their sixth consecutive home win. Up next, they face New Mexico State on Dec. 5.

UC Irvine's NCAA Comeback Cut Short by Princeton's Early Lead in Water Polo Clash

In the NCAA Championship's first round, UC Irvine lost 12-7 to Princeton at Uytengsu Aquatics Center. Despite a strong effort, including two goals from freshman Johan Thrall, UC Irvine couldn't overcome Princeton's early 3-0 lead. The Anteaters, who ended their season with an 18-10 record, had contributions from multiple players, but faced challenges with 15 exclusions and less effective power plays compared to Princeton. Coach Dan Klatt acknowledged the team's lack of experience in the tournament but expressed pride in their achievements, including their first NCAA appearance since 1993. The Anteater defense, usually strong, conceded 12 goals, the most since late October. Scoring for UC Irvine was spread among Thrall, Stevens, Campbell, Liechty, Patist, and Padua, with Shipman assisting twice. Princeton's lead was maintained throughout the game, with notable performance from Vladan Mitrovic.
