Helicopter Team Overcomes Swirling Winds to Rescue Injured Hiker in Black Star Canyon

Yesterday afternoon, a skilled OCFA helicopter rescue team successfully carried out a hoist operation to save an injured hiker in Black Star Canyon, overcoming challenging winds and a narrow landing area. A paramedic was lowered to provide aid before both were hoisted back to safety. This mission highlights the critical role of helicopter rescues in emergency situations.

Irvine Unveils Plans for 700-Acre Nature Preserve and Over a Thousand New Homes

Irvine is set to gain a new 700-acre nature preserve and hiking trails at the city's northern end, following Irvine City Council's plan to convert the site of a controversial old asphalt factory into open space. The project also includes the construction of 1,237 new homes by developer Brookfield Residential on 70 acres of the site, generating at least $600 million for the city. The factory, All American Asphalt, which faced years of complaints over fumes by Orchard Hills residents, ceased operations in November, with the city paying $285 million for the shutdown and purchase. About a quarter of the new homes will be affordable for those earning near 80% of the city's median income. The new Gateway Preserve, largely donated by the Irvine Company, will be managed by the Irvine Ranch Conservancy, featuring up to 12 miles of trails and a potential Visitor Center. City Council praised the initiative, although concerns were raised about the affordability of additional housing. The factory's operators, who settled a class action lawsuit for $1.25 million without admitting wrongdoing, did not comment at the council meeting.

Secure Your Spot to See The Guilds’ Unforgettable Dance Gala, April 14

The Pas de Deux chapter of The Guilds is hosting "An Evening of Dance" on April 14, featuring performances by ABT Company dancers and a pre-show reception. The event supports the education and training of ABT Gillespie School students. Fine more information here.

Irvine Launches 30-Year Plan to Boost Urban Forest - Your Input Needed

Irvine has around 550,000 trees, with 68,000 maintained by the City in public spaces. The city is developing a 30-year Urban Forest Master Plan to grow its tree canopy and seeks public input through a survey. Fill out a brief survey and share your ideas bit.ly/3U8Zty3.

Transform Your Dog Walks: Master the 'Red Light, Green Light' Method

Struggling with leash-pulling during walks with your dog? The Irvine Animal Care Center suggests using the "Red Light, Green Light" method for effective leash training.

  • Simply stop walking when your dog pulls (red light) and proceed when the leash slackens (green light).

  • Praising your dog and using treats for following commands can reinforce good behavior.

  • Practice this technique in short sessions twice daily, using a standard 6-foot, non-retractable leash for best results.

  • Avoid retractable leashes as they encourage pulling. With consistency, your walks can become enjoyable explorations.
