Irvine Ranch Conservancy Battles Invasive Beetles to Protect Native Habitats

The Irvine Ranch Conservancy is combating invasive species like the Gold Spotted Oak Borer (GSOB) and the Shot Hole Borer (SHB) to protect native habitats in Orange County. Both beetles, originating from different regions (GSOB from Southeastern Arizona and SHB from Southeast Asia), infest and damage trees through boring behavior, though they target different tree species and cause harm in distinct ways (GSOB through larval feeding leading to tree death, SHB by spreading a disease-causing fungus). Effective control requires tailored strategies due to their unique life cycles and impacts. The Conservancy also advises residents to use local firewood to prevent the spread of these and other invasive insects, emphasizing the "buy it where you burn it" approach.
