UC Irvine Spearheads Revolutionary Study on Muscle Control with $15M NSF Grant

The National Science Foundation has awarded a $15 million grant to the University of California, Irvine's Integrative Movement Sciences Institute for a six-year project under the NSFโs Biology Integration Institutes program. Led by Monica Daley, the research focuses on understanding muscle control during rapid movements in complex environments, crucial for insights into animal diversity, human athletic performance, and health. The project involves collaboration with experts from 21 institutions, aiming to integrate mechanical, neural, and sensory systems studies for better agility understanding. The research will explore muscle dynamics, neuromechanical control, and other areas, with potential applications in biotechnology, movement therapies, and rehabilitation. The initiative also emphasizes interdisciplinary training for over 450 trainees, contributing to the UCI's Brilliant Future campaign and its role in academic and economic excellence.

Irvine Police Thwart Cross-Border Car Theft Scheme; Two Arrested

Two men were arrested for attempting to take a stolen vehicle into Mexico, following a scam involving a Facebook Marketplace ad. The victim, from Oxnard, was tricked into bringing their car to Irvine, where it was stolen under the pretense of needing it to pick up cash. Irvine Police, predicting the car might be headed to Mexico based on similar incidents, worked with the CHP and CBP to intercept the vehicle at the San Ysidro border. The suspects, Abel Cortes (21) and Christopher Hernandez (20), both from Tijuana, were detained and charged with possession of a stolen vehicle. This scam, targeting primarily the Spanish-speaking community, has been noted across Southern California. The Irvine PD advises caution when responding to job ads, prompt reporting of scams, and providing accurate information to the police.
