Hope and Healing: November Dedicated to Alzheimer's Awareness and Support

November is Alzheimer's awareness month, aiming to support millions affected globally by spreading hope and encouragement.
Learn about UCI Health Memory Disorders Program which offers expert diagnosis and treatment for various memory and cognitive disorders, including Alzheimer's and dementia, providing comprehensive assessments and care in a supportive environment at two locations. Contact: 949-824-8600 for more info.
UC Irvine's Latest Initiative: An Innovative Mobile Food Pantry to Aid Student Nutrition

On Nov. 15, UC Irvine's Basic Needs Center launched a new 22-foot mobile food pantry, starting with a reveal event at the Pereira Drive roundabout. The first 200 attendees received free Tupperware. Funded by a $245,000 grant, this van aims to improve food access for UCI students, offering a variety of food items and CalFresh benefits information. It will start serving at Arroyo Vista and Verano 8 housing in December, with a monthly schedule. The center is also running a ZotFunder campaign until Dec. 31 to finance the pantry. Students can book appointments online to use the pantry, which complements the existing FRESH Pantry.

UCI Health's Precision Medicine Leads to Breakthrough in Treating Advanced Lung Cancer Case

Michelle Helm overcame a terminal lung cancer diagnosis with the help of UCI Health specialists. Initially misdiagnosed and given six months to live, Helm's daughter's suggestion for genetic testing revealed a treatable mutation. UCI Health's precision medicine approach, including targeted therapy and surgery, successfully treated her advanced lung cancer. Helm is now healthy, active, and participating in the UCI Anti-Cancer Challenge to support cancer research. Her journey highlights the importance of genetic testing and advanced treatments in lung cancer care.

Join A Comprehensive Mountain Biking Workshop for Aspiring Riders

This mountain biking clinic is ideal for beginners and intermediate riders to improve their skills. It covers fundamentals like balance, body position, and wheel placement, including practical demonstrations and feedback. The clinic is suitable for level 3 riders and has a 1-through-5 difficulty rating system. Participants must be 16 or older, with under-18s accompanied by a guardian. Essential gear includes a mountain bike with specific features, safety equipment like helmets and gloves, and appropriate clothing. The clinic, led by IRC, is on November 18 from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm in Irvine Open Space Preserve, with a 2.5-mile ride and 370 feet elevation change. Registration is required, and participants must adhere to safety protocols and sign a liability waiver.

Bommer Canyon offers a variety of outdoor activities organized by numerous groups and volunteers, with most programs being free of charge. Pre-registration is required for events led by IRC-Certified Volunteers, closing at 4 p.m. the day before the event. Minors must be accompanied by an adult, and for any assistance, reach out via email to [email protected].

UCI Men's Water Polo Eyes Victory in Semifinals: Stellar Season Leads to Big West Showdown

UC Irvine's water polo team, ranked 6th nationally, has earned a first-round bye in the Big West Championship and will face either UC Davis or Long Beach State in the semifinals on November 18. UC Davis, the fourth seed, has a 3-2 league record, while fifth-seeded Long Beach State stands at 2-3 in the Big West. UC Irvine had a successful season, achieving their first regular season title since 2000 and their first winning season in conference play since 2017. Key players include Johann Thrall and Gage Verdegaal, leading the team in points, and goalkeeper Garrett Selby, who recently recorded a career-best 17 saves.

Irvine Police Warn of Rising Carjackings Linked to Online Job Scams

A crime ring in Southern California is targeting Spanish-speaking individuals through Facebook help-wanted ads, leading to ten carjackings or car thefts over the past year. Victims, lured to Irvine with promises of high pay for transporting cash to Bakersfield, faced armed carjackings or threats of violence. Many stolen cars were taken to Mexico. Irvine PD advises caution with online job ads and urges victims to report incidents to local police.
Irvine Robbery Suspect Found in Jail Thanks to UCLA PD Collaboration

In a recent Felony Friday update, 22-year-old Chyron Lonewolf Muhammad from Irvine, identified as a robbery suspect from an October post, was located by detectives at a Los Angeles County jail. Thanks to UCLA PD's assistance, charges are being requested against Chyron for a robbery near Alton and Technology West, where suspects threatened a store employee and were seen in UCLA apparel.
