Eyes on the Sky: SpaceX's Spectacular Evening Launch Captivates Southern California

SpaceX successfully launched a Falcon 9 rocket with 22 Starlink satellites from Vandenberg Space Force Base on April 1, after several delays due to bad weather. This marked the 15th flight for the rocket's first-stage booster, which landed on the drone ship "Of Course I Still Love You." The launch was visible across Southern California. Starlink aims to provide broadband internet from low Earth orbit. SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk in 2002, also had a productive weekend with two Falcon 9 launches from Kennedy Space Center, deploying satellites including the Eutelsat36D and 23 more Starlinks. Despite a recent setback with its Starship rocket, SpaceX's progress is crucial for NASA's lunar ambitions, with plans to use Starship for moon landings in the coming years.
Green Bin Update: Irvine Residents Can Now Use Compostable Bags for Organic Waste

Irvine residents are thanked for their efforts in separating organic waste for composting, in line with a state law to cut greenhouse gases. A new city agreement makes recycling organics easier, allowing the use of compostable or paper bags for organic waste, which can then be placed in the green bin. This initiative, aimed at recycling food scraps, yard trimmings, paper, and cardboard, helps protect the environment. For more info, visit cityofirvine.org/sb1383.

Goodwill of Orange County Celebrates Grand Reopening in Irvine with Special Event

Goodwill of Orange County is reopening in Irvine with a grand opening event on April 5 at 10 A.M. with special thanks to Irvine United Congregational Church. The event encourages donations with hopes to gather enough to fill a whole Goodwill truck. The first 25 donors receive exclusive gift cards and pins. Join to make a difference in the community!
Tanaka Farm’s Spring Harvest Festival Extended Through April 14th

Tanaka Farm’s Spring Harvest Festival is now extended to April 14th, happening on Saturdays and Sundays (April 6-7 & 13-14) from 10am to 4pm. Enjoy Spring and Easter-themed foods, games, and activities including photo ops with the Easter Bunny, Easter Egg Hunts, and more. Activities like mini-golf and arts & crafts are available, with special dishes at the Tanaka Grill. Activities require tickets: $6 each or 6 for $30.

Behind the Green Veil: OCPA's Renewable Energy Claims Questioned

Despite claims of delivering 95.5% renewable energy, the Orange County Power Authority (OCPA) has been accused of misleading consumers by hiding its reliance on fossil fuels, a practice revealed through its Power Content Label. This discrepancy comes despite OCPA's mission to surpass Southern California Edison in eliminating fossil-fired power. California regulators are considering action against this deceptive practice, but changes may not occur until 2028. OCPA's claim of delivering high renewable energy percentages is contradicted by the reality that a significant portion of its energy comes from non-renewable sources, contributing to substantial greenhouse gas emissions. The organization's promotional materials suggesting direct delivery of renewable energy to customers are misleading, given the nature of California's power grid and the actual percentage of renewable energy it carries. OCPA's environmental benefits are also questioned due to various negative impacts associated with renewable energy production and resource acquisition.

UC Irvine Men’s Volleyball Sweeps CSUN in 3-0 Victory, Sets Eyes on Upcoming Hawaii Matches

In a compelling match held at the Bren Events Center in Irvine, California, the No. 3 ranked UC Irvine Anteaters showcased their dominance with a 3-0 sweep over the No. 16 CSUN Matadors, with set scores of 25-22, 25-21, and 30-28. This victory came as a significant rebound for UC Irvine, especially after hitting a season-low in their previous game. The team's performance was notably improved, achieving a .412 hitting percentage, marking it as their third highest of the season. Hilir Henno led the charge with an impressive 16 kills, managing a .429 hitting percentage, while Nolan Flexen, returning to the starting lineup, contributed 14 kills at a .440 rate. The Anteaters excelled at the net, out-blocking the Matadors 9-6, with contributions from players like Maxim Grigoriev and Connor Campbell, who were instrumental in both offense and defense. Despite the efforts of CSUN's Kyle Hobus, who matched Henno with 16 kills, UC Irvine's cohesive team play and strategic execution secured them the win. Looking ahead, UC Irvine is set to continue its homestand by hosting Hawaii in a pair of matches on the upcoming Friday and Saturday, promising more exciting volleyball action.
