Irvine Debates Costly Gypsum Canyon Plan vs. Voter-Approved Great Park Veterans Cemetery
The Veterans Cemetery proposed for Gypsum Canyon in Anaheim is projected to cost $100 million more than the previously proposed site at Irvine’s Great Park. A report by the California Department of General Services estimated Gypsum Canyon's direct costs at $126 million, prompting a public analysis. Irvine Vice Mayor Larry Agran had city staff compare this with the Great Park site, which was voter-approved. The city hired Geosyntec Consultants to evaluate both plans, finding Gypsum Canyon would cost at least $146 million and face environmental and seismic challenges, with a decade-long completion time, compared to $42 million and 36-48 months for the Great Park site. Despite the findings, no Council action was taken. Councilmember Tammy Kim questioned the study’s expense rather than the higher costs of Gypsum Canyon. City Manager Oliver Chi explained the study cost the City $15,000-$20,000.
New Culinary Hotspots: Le Shrimp Ramen and The Dive Oyster Bar Debut This May
Le Shrimp Ramen: Combining Japanese ramen, Chinese noodles, and fresh tiger prawns, Le Shrimp's signature shrimp-chicken broth, simmered for eight hours, boasts a tangerine-orange hue and smoky wok-hei aroma. Offerings include a vegan broth, shrimp ramen trio with prawns, prawn dumplings, and ebiko prawn paste, plus spicy ramen dishes featuring crispy chicken cutlet and handmade wontons. Start with the Long Jing Tea Lava Egg.
The Dive Oyster Bar: Featuring up to six seasonal oyster varieties, The Dive's raw bar offers options like Fanny Bay, Kumamoto, and Naked Cowboy oysters with traditional accompaniments. Cajun/Creole steam-kettle dishes include steamed clams and mussels in creamy garlic broth, jambalaya, chowder, and the Bouillaroast. Handhelds feature lobster rolls and po’boy sandwiches. End with crispy beignets.
