6 IUSD Students Recognized for Excellence in Career and Technical Education at ROP Showcase

Six IUSD students were honored at the Annual Coastline Regional Occupational Program (ROP) Student Showcase for their leadership and dedication in Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes. Faraz Shahbazi from Woodbridge High School was named Career Education Student of the Year for his work in the Dental CTE Program. Coastline ROP prepares students for careers and further education through classroom instruction, hands-on learning, and internships. IUSD Board Members Lauren Brooks and Katie McEwen, along with other district officials, attended to honor the students. Congratulations to these students for their accomplishments! North Irvine Announces Development of 711-Acre Gateway Preserve โ Public Meeting on May 16

A new 711-acre open space, Gateway Preserve, is being developed in North Irvine. Join us for an informational meeting on Thursday, May 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Portola Springs Community Center to learn about the plans, maps, and potential trails for this preserve. You'll also hear about the management and development plans to protect sensitive habitats and the regional conservation efforts. Weekly Bingo at Lakeview Senior Center Supports Local Senior Outreach Programs

Every Tuesday afternoon, dozens of eager players gather at the Lakeview Senior Center for Bingo, hosted by Friends of Outreach, a volunteer-based non-profit in Irvine. This charity supports Irvine's senior outreach programs through fundraisers and community events, with Bingo being a primary revenue source. 25% of Bingo profits go to the Homebound Senior Outreach program, funding emergency response devices, in-home services, and transportation for seniors. Since the 1990s, over $200,000 has been donated. The games, which run from 12:45 PM to 3:15 PM, are open to anyone 18 and older, with buy-ins starting at $8. Prizes range from $48 to $55, with a Powerball Jackpot up to $300. Vice President Maria Yousef highlights the program's goal to help seniors stay in their homes and socialize. From May 6โ12, 8 dogs, 14 cats, and 1 rabbit found new homes! The adopted dogs were Castiel, Chile, Maya, Mildred, Nacho, Portia, Queso, and Salsa. The adopted cats included Alana, Almond, Andrina, Aquata, Atlas, Attina, Burgundy, Chocolate, Crevette, Fred, Michi, Pistachio, Truffle, and Winter. The rabbit adopted was named Wicket. UC Irvine Women's Soccer Welcomes Midfielder Chifumi Sasaki from Tokyo, Japan

UC Irvine women's soccer welcomes Chifumi Sasaki, a talented midfielder from Tokyo. Sasaki, who played for the renowned Urawa Red Diamonds and helped her team reach national semifinals five times, brings excellent vision and technique despite an ACL injury in 2022. Off the field, she volunteers to help low-vision and homeless individuals play soccer and enjoys forest bathing, reading, and TV dramas. Head Coach Scott Juniper praises her high soccer IQ and technical skills, looking forward to integrating her into the team's diverse international squad.
UCI Baseballโs Myles Smith Secures Second Big West Player of the Week Award in Three Weeks

Myles Smith has claimed his second Big West Field Player of the Week award in three weeks, marking the team's seventh honor in 2023. Smith led with a .467 average, going 7-for-15 with nine runs scored and six RBIs, including a two-homer game against Long Beach State. Despite going hitless against UCLA, he walked four times. Additionally, Smith hit .600 over four games, with 12 hits, three home runs, and nine RBIs. He is the sixth Anteater to win a Big West weekly award this season.

Irvine Valley's Marocco and Dews Reach Quarterfinals at 3C2A Women's Beach Volleyball State Championships

Irvine Valley's No. 1 pair, sophomores Tessa Marocco and Kenzie Dews, stood out at the 3C2A Women's Beach Volleyball State Championships, finishing tied for sixth after reaching the quarterfinals. The duo won their first two pool play matches at West Valley and advanced with a walk-over win against MiraCosta and a victory over Folsom Lake's Abigail Seabury and Mackenzie Natusch. They defeated El Camino's top team before losing to San Diego Mesa's eventual state champions, Kaylin Jager and Myah Gomez, in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, IVC's Natalia Brandlin and Audrey Fowler won by forfeit against Monterey Peninsula but lost in three sets to El Camino's Dorr and D'Angelo. Irvine Valley won the Orange Empire Conference with a 14-0 record and competed in the So. Cal. Regional Playoffs.

Beckman High Advances to CIF Championship with 3-0 Win Over Los Alamitos

Beckman High School's baseball team secured a 3-0 victory over Los Alamitos in the CIF Division 3 semifinal, earning a spot in the championship game against St. John Bosco. Beckman's senior left-hander Rex Jarcy pitched a complete game shutout, allowing six hits and striking out three. The Patriots broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning with three runs, led by key hits from Zach Ireland, Isaiah Kapur, and Ethan Rhee. Coach Kevin Lavalle praised Jarcy's performance and the team's resilience. Despite a strong season, Los Alamitos couldn't score and will not advance. The championship game details will be announced soon.

Fatal Irvine Crash: Community Urged to Help Identify Hit-and-Run Driver

On May 9, 2024, at 4:32 p.m., Irvine Police and Orange County Fire Authority responded to a rollover crash near Culver Drive and Trabuco Road. Allen Yangkaou Lee, 67, was driving north on Culver Drive when a Honda Civic turned against a red light, forcing Lee to swerve, resulting in his vehicle hitting a median, tree, and light pole before overturning. Lee was rescued and hospitalized but later died from his injuries. The suspect vehicle, a silver or beige 2008-2011 Honda Civic with racing decals and red material on the door handles, fled the scene. Witnesses or those with dash-cam footage are urged to contact Detective Christopher Ostrowski at 949-724-7047.
