Irvine Police Department Goes Green with State-Funded Electric Fleet

The Irvine Police Department will soon add electric vehicles to its fleet for use in the Great Park, thanks to $990,000 in state funding obtained by Senator Dave Min. This funding will buy 13 electric vehicles, including Ford Lightning trucks and Mustang Mach Es, and Polaris Rangers, aligning with Irvine's climate goals. The funds will also cover new charging stations and advanced communication equipment. Senator Min is commended for his support in this initiative. More details here

Examining the Impact of Irvine's Proposed Bottled Water Ban on Local Communities

Irvine's proposed bottled water ban has raised important discussions about balancing environmental goals with community needs. The ban overlooks the fact that not all residents have access to clean tap water, with some relying on bottled water due to contaminants in the city's supply. It could also impact vulnerable groups like the immunocompromised, who depend on bottled water. Bottled water is crucial for community events, local sports, and non-profits, and in emergencies, its availability can be lifesaving. The ban might also affect local businesses financially. The city should consider more practical alternatives that ensure environmental sustainability without compromising access to safe drinking water.

UC Irvine Challenges Texas Tech's Winning Streak in Anticipated Women's Basketball Matchup

UC Irvine's women's basketball team, with a 4-2 record, is set to face an undefeated Texas Tech team (7-0) on Wednesday, November 29th. The game, scheduled for 6 p.m. CST / 4 p.m. PST, will take place at the United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock, Texas. UC Irvine boasts a strong defensive record, having held opponents under 70 points in their last 40 games and ranking seventh nationally in scoring defense last year. Currently, they are on a three-game winning streak, averaging over 70 points with a +8.3 scoring margin. Junior Nikki Tom has been a standout player, leading in steals and averaging 12.0 points recently. The team shows balanced scoring prowess, with seven players averaging at least 6.0 points per game. This season marks the 50th for UC Irvine women's basketball, a period during which they've had a strong home record, particularly since the 2017-18 season.

On the other side, Texas Tech remains one of the 26 unbeaten teams in NCAA Division I. Key players for Texas Tech include Jasmine Shavers and Bailey Maupin, the leading scorers, and Kilah Freelon, who leads in rebounds. The team is coached by Krista Gerlich, now in her fourth season. Historically, UC Irvine trails Texas Tech 0-2 in their all-time series, with their last meetings occurring in the 1980s. UC Irvine's recent performance includes a 66-60 victory over Pacific, with significant contributions from players like Nikki Tom, Nevaeh Dean, Nevaeh Parkinson, and Diaba Konate.

UC Irvine Men’s Basketball Gear Up for Consecutive Road Games Against Duquesne and Utah State

The UC Irvine Anteaters are currently navigating through a series of three back-to-back road games, with upcoming matches against Duquesne on November 29 and Utah State on December 2. Duquesne, their next opponent, boasts a 4-2 record this season, with Dae Dae Grant as their leading scorer. Notably, Duquesne is recognized for their defensive prowess, particularly in blocking, and is predicted to be a strong contender in the Atlantic 10. On the other hand, UC Irvine has been showcasing impressive form, recently clinching the Ball Dawgs Classic title and currently holding the nation's fourth-longest active winning streak. They have achieved their highest-ever KenPom ranking at 64th and are placed 6th in the CollegeInsider Mid-Major Poll. The team's success is partly attributed to the balanced scoring attack, with five players averaging double figures in points, led by Justin Hohn. Their bench strength, efficient field goal shooting, and dominance in scoring within the paint have been key factors in their performances. Additionally, Pierre Crockrell II's exceptional playmaking skills have placed him at the forefront in assists both in the team and in the Big West. UC Irvine's overall team statistics are impressive, ranking favorably in national categories such as assists per game and scoring margin.
