Jamboree Road Closure and Construction: Overhaul Starts January 16

Roadwork on Jamboree Road, between Michelle Drive and the railroad tracks, starts January 16, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Expect a two-month closure of Jamboree's northbound Walnut off-ramp and southbound Walnut on-ramp. The project, finishing this summer, includes replacing curbs, gutters, ramps, sidewalks, and installing utility protections, water valves, signal detections, and striping. Join an animal tracking adventure in Fremont Canyon, part of Irvine Ranch Open Space, on January 13 from 9 am to 12 pm. This 3-hour, level-3 difficulty activity is ideal for older children and adults.
Learn basic tracking skills to identify signs of local wildlife like mule deer, bobcats, and mountain lions.
Wear comfortable, dust-friendly clothes and closed-toe shoes. Bring water, first aid, and other safety gear.
Pre-registration is mandatory.
The event, led by IRC and OC Parks, covers 3 miles with a 580-foot elevation change. Suitable for ages 12 and up, with only 2 spots left.

UC Irvine Women's Track & Field Team Gears Up for 2024 Season Opener at Spokane Indoor Challenge

The UC Irvine women's indoor track & field team will start their 2024 season at the Spokane Indoor Challenge, Jan. 12-13, at The Podium in Spokane, Washington. The team, with 25 athletes competing in 12 events, includes 20 returning letterwinners and 12 new members, featuring nine freshmen.
- Three Spokane meets this season, with a notable trip to Albuquerque for the Dr. MLK Jr. Invitational.
- 14 returning athletes are already top-10 in UCI history in various events.
- Senior Deandra Tyler is a top contender in shot put and weight throw, with impressive personal records.
- Junior Sameen Andar holds two school records in distance events.
- Newcomers in sprints/hurdles include promising freshmen and a state champion.
- In multis & jumps, UCI features recent heptathlon state champions and record holders.
- Next, the team will compete in the Dr. MLK Jr. Invitational in Albuquerque on Jan. 20.
UC Irvine Men's Tennis Team Eyes Victory in Upcoming 2024 Season with Strong Lineup

UC Irvine's men's tennis team, with a history of 16 Big West championships and four conference tournament titles, is gearing up for the 2024 season. They've recently won the 2022 Big West tournament and made their 12th NCAA Division I Tournament appearance. The team returns seven experienced players, including five from the 2022 squad. Key players have earned All-Big West honors, and the team has been bolstered by two graduate transfers from top-25 programs and a highly ranked freshman recruit. They had a successful fall season with a .641 singles record. The 2024 season starts at home against Westcliff on January 18, with a mix of home and away games, including the Big West opener against UC Davis on March 30. The team aims for another Big West tournament title at the end of April, driven by strong team belief and camaraderie.

Irvine Valley Women's Basketball Fell To State Champs Orange Coast in Conference Opener

Irvine Valley's women's basketball team, ranked 14th in the state with a 9-5 record, began Orange Empire Conference play at home against 5th-ranked Orange Coast (11-3 record) on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Orange Coast, led by top scorers McIntyre, Cassell, Lopez, and Arreola, recently beat East LA 72-55. Irvine Valley, coming off a 77-48 win over Palo Verde, is led by Saiki, Ziska, Tomlinson, and Freeman. Their next game is against Santa Ana.
Irvine Valley Soccer Stars Granzow and Miller Sweep Awards in Stellar Season

Irvine Valley sophomore soccer players Lennart Granzow and Grant Miller received multiple awards. Granzow was named the Orange Empire Conference's defensive player of the year and earned several honors including second team All-American. He scored five goals and started all 19 games, contributing to the team's strong defensive record. Miller, leading the team with 17 goals, was also recognized as an all-state player and Scholar All-American. Both played key roles in Irvine Valley's successful season, finishing second in the conference and reaching the So. Cal. Regional Playoff final.

Irvine High School to Host Memorial for Esteemed Football Coach Terry Henigan

A celebration of life for Terry Henigan, a beloved former football coach at Irvine High School, is set for Saturday, Feb. 24, at the school's gym. The event starts with an informal gathering at 1:30 p.m., followed by a formal remembrance at 2:30 p.m. Coach Henigan, who passed away on Dec. 20, 2023, left a profound impact on many, being remembered not only for his coaching achievements, including a 192-126-6 record and multiple CIF titles, but also as a loving family man and a role model. His legacy is cherished by family, players, and the community.

Irvine, a 65-year-old woman was slapped on the buttocks by a 6-foot-tall black male suspect wearing a gold chain.
