Traffic signal synchronization is underway in Santa Ana and Fountain Valley on Barranca Parkway, Muirlands Boulevard, Dyer Road, Segerstrom Avenue, and Slater Avenue, aiming to improve traffic flow and reduce emissions. IUSD's 43rd Annual Science Fair, sponsored by Irvine Public Schools Foundation and Broadcom Foundation has started. Check out the projects online. Middle school winners will be announced on January 17, and high school winners on January 24.

Volunteer at Irvine Ranch Conservancy's Native Seed Farm in Irvine this Winter on Jan 10 to help with various tasks like seed harvesting, planting, and tending to seedlings. It's a great opportunity to learn about local plants and wildlife, with no experience or special equipment needed. The activity is Level 2 difficulty, involving physical tasks like bending and standing. Minors must be accompanied by a guardian. The seeds collected aid in habitat restoration. UC Irvine Men’s Basketball Snatches Overtime Victory Against UC Davis

UC Irvine secured a 74-71 overtime victory against UC Davis, with Justin Hohn's last-second layup pushing the game into extra time. Hohn and Bent Leuchten each scored 14 points, contributing significantly to the win. UCI excelled in free throws, going 29-33, and out-rebounded UC Davis 46-30. The team remains undefeated in Big West play at 4-0 and improves their overall record to 11-5. Key contributions also came from Andre Henry and Pierre Crockrell II, with UC Davis' Elijah Pepper leading the game in scoring. This win marks UCI's first overtime victory since January 2019 and improves their home record to 6-0. Next, UCI faces Hawai'i in an away game.

UCI Men’s Volleyball Team Hits the Ground Running with Top 5 Ranking and Star-Studded Lineup

UCI's volleyball team, ranked 4th in the AVCA preseason poll, begins the 2024 season with high expectations. They will play three matches in five days, including against 20th-ranked George Mason and 14th-ranked Princeton. Key players include junior Hilir Henno, an AVCA All-American, and Maxim Grigoriev, the Big West Freshman of the Year. New transfer Nolan Flexen and grad transfer Brett Sheward add significant talent. UCI also welcomes new assistant coaches, including former UCI champions Michael Brinkley and Scott Stadick.

IVC's Lennart Granzow Named Defensive Player of the Year in Orange Empire Conference

Lennart Granzow, a standout player from Irvine Valley's men's soccer team, was named the defensive player of the year in the Orange Empire Conference. He led the team to a 12-4-6 overall record and a 7-1-6 conference record, reaching the So. Cal. regional final in the 3C2A playoffs. Granzow, a sophomore center back, started all 19 games, scoring five goals with one assist. He earned multiple accolades, including first team all-conference, all-state, all-West Region, and second team All-American. Last season, he also received first-team all-conference and all-state honors, contributing to IVC's playoff run. More updates on IVC's all-conference players are expected next week.

Crean Lutheran's Kaiden Bailey Hits 1,000 Points in High School Basketball

Kaiden Bailey, a sophomore guard at Crean Lutheran High School, reached 1,000 career points in basketball this weekend. Averaging 26 points per game, he scored 37 in a recent victory against Redondo Union. His coach, Nate Klitzing, praised Bailey's achievement, especially as it was accomplished in just a season and a half. Bailey, who hasn't committed to a college program yet, plays for Crean Lutheran, which has faced a challenging schedule and aims for D1 and league championship success.
