Anteaters' Initiative Battles Senior Loneliness in Orange County Through Weekly Visits and Activities

A group of Anteaters from the Patient Project, an undergraduate club, visit senior centers in Orange County weekly to combat loneliness among the elderly through activities like bingo. Originally supporting individuals in hospital waiting rooms, the club now engages with residents of five senior living communities in conversations, games, arts and crafts, and music. Volunteers, including students from health-related majors, cherish the personal connections made, highlighting the importance of care, empathy, and compassion in their future medical careers. The project aims to expand its volunteer base and continue fostering meaningful interactions with seniors, emphasizing the lasting impact of these experiences on both the students and the elderly.

Bowers Museum Unveils Largest Exhibition of Asian Comics in History

Over the last 20 years, the Bowers Museum has been a significant showcase for Asian artifacts, including notable exhibitions on Tibetan treasures, Japanese samurai art, Silk Road relics, and Terra Cotta warriors. Its latest exhibition, "Asian Comics: Evolution of an Art Form," curated by Paul Gravett and developed by the UK's Barbican Centre, marks a departure by focusing on the contemporary cultural impact of Asian comics. This largest-ever collection of Asian comic art, first shown outside Europe in a museum setting, features around 400 pieces from 22 countries, highlighting the diversity and creativity in Asian visual storytelling, particularly influenced by Japanese manga. The exhibition explores themes from historical influences to modern-day issues, alongside immersive multimedia installations that demonstrate the influence of comics on other media. Running through September 8, this exhibition not only showcases the artistry and variety of Asian comics but also examines their global influence and cultural significance, moving beyond traditional views to appreciate the unique storytelling traditions across Asia.
