Cement Truck Rollover in Irvine: Water Leak Mistaken for Fuel Spill, Driver Hospitalized
A cement truck rolled over at Gateway Boulevard and Alton Parkway in Irvine, initially suspected of leaking fuel, but the Hazardous Materials Response Team found it to be water from an on-board tank. The driver was treated and transported by firefighter paramedics as a trauma patient. Thank you to Irvine Public Works and Irvine Police Department for their hard work teamwork!
11-Year-Old Athena Elling Becomes Youngest Graduate at Irvine Valley College
11-year-old Athena Elling is set to become the youngest graduate of Irvine Valley College, taking the title from her older brother who graduated just before his 12th birthday. Living in San Juan Capistrano, Athena enrolled at IVC at age 9, inspired by her brother now at UC Irvine. Graduating cum laude with a GPA over 3.5, professors praised her maturity and dedication. Despite her academic achievements, Athena is still a typical kid who enjoys Legoland, Disneyland, Taekwondo, acting, modeling, guitar, and learning new things. This summer, she plans to continue her studies at IVC, aiming for two more AA degrees.
Chef Shuffle: Discover the Latest Moves in the OC Culinary World
Chef Peter Lai started at The Iron Press and The Blind Rabbit in Anaheim, moved to South Coast Plazaโs Water Grill, and is now at Bourbon Steak in Waldorf Astoria Monarch Beach.
Chef Zach Scherer has worked at The Country Club and Helmsman Ale House in Costa Mesa, then Bello by Sandro Nardone. Now, heโs running pop-ups as Chrysalis and plans to open a new restaurant and wine bar in Costa Mesa by late summer/fall.
Chef Alan Sanz has experience from various international restaurants and is now leading Maizano at Mercado Gonzรกlez, focusing on regional Mexican cuisine.
Chef Dee Nguyen previously ran Break of Dawn and now hosts The Nest, a pop-up dinner service in Lake Forest.
Bartender Steven Hayden introduced zero-proof cocktails at Journeymanโs, moved to Old Brea Chop House, and is now at Mulberry Street Ristorante in Fullerton.

UC Irvine Tops CSUN 5-2 with Late-Inning Surge
UC Irvine baseball defeated CSUN 5-2 in a closely contested game at Anteater Ballpark. Despite being out-hit early, UCI tied the game with a second-inning run and surged ahead in the sixth inning with a home run by Caden Kendle, followed by a double and a balk for the go-ahead run. Ricky Ojeda pitched three scoreless innings, extending his streak to 17.2 innings, and Ricky Tibbett secured the save. Coach Ben Orloff celebrated his 200th career win. The series continues Friday with freshmen Trevor Hansen (UCI) and Ryan Halamicek (CSUN) facing off.
UC Irvine's Liam Miksic Sets School Record in Javelin at NCAA West First Round
Junior Liam Miksic set a school record in the javelin for UC Irvine men's track & field at the NCAA West First Round, throwing 68.34m and finishing 14th overall. Junior Logan Peyton had a best throw of 53.97m in his first NCAA regional. In the shot put, senior Justin Willingham placed 18th with an 18.21m toss, after a season where he broke the school record four times. Junior Jacob Hawkins finished 31st with 17.51m. Senior Drew Pickett clocked 14.17 seconds in the 110m hurdles, ranking 38th.

From Irvine Valley to Vanguard: Noah Madole's Breakout Baseball Season
Former Irvine Valley standout Noah Madole had a stellar junior year at Vanguard, batting .441 with two home runs, nine doubles, and 14 RBI. The outfielder had a .493 on-base percentage and a .695 slugging percentage in 28 games, scoring 11 runs. Vanguard ended the season with a 26-23 record. Madole, who previously played at Huntington Beach High and spent three seasons at IVC, had notable performances in 2022 and 2023, batting .295 and .269 respectively, with multiple multi-hit games and contributions in various stats categories.
