Understanding Ear Infections: Symptoms, Types, and When to Seek Help
Ear infections, known as Otitis Media (OM), can affect both adults and children and are often painful. They usually resolve without treatment, but infants may need medical intervention due to underdeveloped ear anatomy and weaker immune systems.
About 15% of adolescents with OM may experience hearing loss. Ear infections, caused by viruses or bacteria, often lead to ear pain, muffled hearing, and fluid buildup.
Common types include Acute Otitis Media (AOM), Otitis Media with Effusion (OME), and Otitis Externa.
Symptoms range from ear pain and fever to hearing loss and pus discharge.
Preventive measures include breastfeeding children for at least 12 months to reduce their risk of developing ear infections, avoiding smoke, and immunizations.
Seek medical help if symptoms persist for over 2-3 days, fluid leaks from the ear, fever exceeds 102.2ยฐF, or hearing loss occurs.
FCC Urgent Cares in Fountain Valley, Irvine Woodbridge, and Costa Mesa, CA, provide expert care for severe ear infections.
