October is Fire Prevention Month, highlighting the importance of fire safety and the efforts to protect communities from wildfires. Organizations like Irvine Ranch Conservancy (IRC) work year-round to mitigate wildfires within the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks by restoring native plant species and removing invasive ones, which fuel fire risk. Invasive plants dry out quickly, increase wildfire intensity, and outcompete native species. IRC encourages the community to help by cleaning gear to prevent invasive seeds from spreading and participating in stewardship activities to remove invasive plants. These efforts contribute to creating fire-resistant habitats and protecting the ecosystem.
