Understanding Visceral Fat - How It Affects Your Heart, Hormones, and Health

Understanding Visceral Fat
What it is: Visceral fat is deep body fat that surrounds internal organs like the heart, liver, and kidneys. It’s found inside the abdomen, beneath the muscles, unlike subcutaneous fat (the fat under your skin).
Why it matters: Small amounts protect organs, but excess visceral fat is linked to serious health issues like heart disease, diabetes, and high cholesterol. It’s called “active fat” because it influences hormone and metabolic functions.
What causes it:
Genetics: Affects where and how much fat your body stores.
Lifestyle: High intake of fatty or sugary foods, inactivity, and stress increase visceral fat.
Hormones: Cortisol (stress hormone) can lead to more fat accumulation.
Health risks and related conditions: Too much visceral fat is tied to obesity, diabetes, atherosclerosis, and rare endocrine disorders like Cushing syndrome or lipodystrophy.
How to measure it: You can’t see or pinch visceral fat, but these methods help estimate it:
Waist size: Over 35" (women) or 40" (men) = higher risk.
Waist-to-hip ratio: >0.85 (women), >0.90 (men).
BMI: 30+ may indicate excess visceral fat.
Waist-to-height ratio: Waist should be ≤ half your height.
Normal range: Visceral fat should make up around 10% of total body fat.
How to reduce it:
Exercise regularly: 30 minutes/day, 5 days/week (cardio, strength, or HIIT).
Eat smart: Follow diets like Mediterranean or DASH.
Try intermittent fasting.
Sleep well and manage stress.
Limit alcohol.
Good news: Visceral fat is easier to lose than subcutaneous fat — consistent healthy habits can show results within 2–3 months.
