Tsunami Advisory Issued for California Coast After 8.8 Earthquake Near Russia

A tsunami advisory was issued for the California coast after a powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck near Russia on Tuesday, July 29. While tsunami warnings were declared for Hawaii and Alaska's Aleutian Islands, the U.S. West Coast — including areas from British Columbia to the California-Mexico border — received an advisory, with a warning for Northern California's Cape Mendocino region.
The first waves could reach Southern California coastal areas around 1 a.m. Wednesday, with potential strong currents lasting until 10 a.m.
While widespread flooding isn’t expected, residents were told to leave beaches, harbors, and marinas.
Cities including Los Angeles, Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, Seal Beach, and Long Beach temporarily closed coastal areas as a precaution.
Authorities stress public safety and readiness to adjust alerts based on new information.
No evacuations have been ordered, and wave heights are expected to be under one foot.
