Tsunami Advisory Issued for California Coast After 8.8 Earthquake Near Russia

A tsunami advisory was issued for the California coast after a powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck near Russia on Tuesday, July 29. • The first waves could reach Southern California coastal areas around 1 a.m. Wednesday, with potential strong currents lasting until 10 a.m.

  • While widespread flooding isn’t expected, residents were told to leave beaches, harbors, and marinas.

  • Cities including Los Angeles, Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, Seal Beach, and Long Beach temporarily closed coastal areas as a precaution.

  • Authorities stress public safety and readiness to adjust alerts based on new information.

How to Choose the Right Sunscreen and Use It Effectively

Sunscreen is an important part of daily skincare in sunny Southern California, but choosing the right one can sometimes be confusing. To help make sun protection easier, UCI Health dermatologist Dr. Kristen Kelly offers helpful guidance on what to look for in a sunscreen.

  • Sunscreen Quick Guide

    • SPF Basics:
SPF 15–100 blocks 93–99% of UVB rays; doesn’t cover UVA.

    • Broad Spectrum:
Protects against UVA + UVB; choose SPF 15+ with this label.

    • Best Ingredients:
      Mineral-based (zinc/titanium) = gentle + reef-safe.
Avoid PABA, trolamine salicylate, and unproven chemicals.

    • Water Resistance:
“Water resistant” = 40 min, “very water resistant” = 80 min.
      Reapply after swimming/sweating.

    • Proper Use:
Use 1 oz (shot glass), apply 20 min before sun, cover missed spots.

    • Reef Safe:
Avoid oxybenzone, octinoxate, octocrylene. Use non-nano mineral sunscreens.

    • Sun Safety:
Wear hats, UV-blocking sunglasses, protective clothes.
      Avoid peak sun (10 a.m.–4 p.m.).

    • Daily Must:
Sunscreen is for all skin tones, every day. Prevents cancer + aging.
