Top 1%: Woodbridge High Celebrates 8 National Merit Semifinalists

Eight students from Woodbridge High have been recognized as National Merit semifinalists, scoring in the top 1% nationally in the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT). This distinction, reflecting high academic aptitude, comes as the importance of standardized testing in college admissions sees a decline post-Covid-19. In 2019, 55% of universities required SAT or ACT scores, a figure that plummeted to 5.5% in 2023. Despite this shift, standardized tests like the PSAT remain relevant, aiding students in gauging their academic standing among peers. As semifinalists advance towards the finalist stage, they must meet further academic and testing criteria, with about half expected to become National Merit Scholars, earning a $2,500 prize. This scenario underscores the ongoing relevance of standardized tests, even as the broader college admissions landscape evolves.

The draw affected both teams' records, with Fullerton at 8-1-1 and Irvine Valley at 5-2-2 overall. They will play their next matches in the coming week.
