Sweet Safety: Tips to Keep Kids Safe This Halloween

With so many gummies and treats that look alike, it’s easy for kids to mistake medicine for candy. UCI Health’s Dr. Pei Lin Chang urges parents to be extra cautious this Halloween by keeping medicines locked away and checking all treats before kids dig in.
Halloween Safety Tips:
🕵️♀️ Inspect all candy before your child eats it—look for tears, pinholes, or discoloration.
🚫 Skip homemade or unwrapped treats from people you don’t know.
🍫 Remove choking hazards like hard candy, gum, or peanuts for kids under 3.
💊 Keep all meds, vitamins, and edibles locked up and out of reach of little hands.
📞 Save the Poison Control number: 800-222-1222.
🧠 Talk with your kids about the difference between candy and medicine—and remind them to check with you before eating anything unfamiliar.
