New Pickleball Courts Coming to Mike Ward Park by Spring 2026

The City of Irvine is building eight new pickleball courts at Mike Ward Community Park — Woodbridge, expected to be completed by spring 2026.

  • The project includes new shade structures, improved lighting, upgraded restrooms, picnic amenities, and landscaping.

  • Currently, Irvine offers multiple pickleball locations citywide, including six lit courts at Portola Springs and two at Los Olivos.

  • Community feedback from events in 2023 and 2025 helped shape the park plans.

Three IUSD Students Recognized at Regeneron International Science Fair

Three Irvine Unified School District students presented their projects at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), which featured nearly 2,000 students from 48 U.S. states and 60 countries.

  • University High sophomore Annika Chatterjee earned 4th Place in Biochemistry and a $600 prize

  • Northwood High junior Sebastian Alexis won 3rd Place in Systems Software, receiving $1,200

  • Senior Nathan Kang also represented Northwood as a finalist in Materials Science.

19 Pets Adopted from Irvine Animal Care Center During Final Week of May

From May 26 to June 1, the Irvine Animal Care Center celebrated the adoption of 3 dogs (Goose, Nori, Panini), 13 cats (including Aang, Skye, and Zuko), and 3 guinea pigs (Anna, Buttercup, Cocoapuff). One tortoise named Flash was transferred to a rescue, and 3 dogs and 1 cat were reunited with their owners. Learn more or adopt at cityofirvine.org/animals.

UCI Baseball’s Ryder Brooks Earns Academic All-District Honors for Second Time

UC Irvine pitcher Ryder Brooks has been named to the 2025 Academic All-District Baseball Team by College Sports Communicators, marking his second time earning the honor and continuing a three-year streak for UCI. A business economics major, Brooks maintained a GPA of 3.5+ while posting a 7-3 record, 72 strikeouts over 69 innings, and earning All-Big West Honorable Mention. His season highlights included a complete game shutout vs. Hawai’i. To qualify, nominees must meet academic and athletic benchmarks. Brooks is one of nine Big West players recognized this year.

IVC to Arkansas: Arthur Bellegy Closes College Tennis Career with Academic and Athletic Honors

Arthur Bellegy, former Irvine Valley College tennis standout, wrapped up a successful college tennis career this spring at NCAA Division I University of Arkansas. He earned 2025 Academic All-District honors while posting a 3.5 GPA, an 11-11 singles record, and a 7-1 doubles mark. Bellegy previously played for New Mexico and led Westcliff University to its best season ever, including a conference title and NAIA quarterfinals run. At IVC, he was a dominant force in 2022, winning both state singles and doubles championships and earning ITA Region I Sophomore Player of the Year honors.

Woodbridge Baseball’s Nevan Namgoong Heads to OC All-Star Game After Standout Season


Woodbridge High senior outfielder Nevan Namgoong wrapped up an impressive season, helping lead the Warriors to a Pacific Coast League title, two CIF playoff wins, and a Ryan Lemmon Invitational championship. Namgoong, who batted .441 with 32 runs, 13 RBI, six doubles, and three triples, was selected to play in the 57th annual Orange County All-Star Game, taking place Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Great Park. Grateful for the honor, he looks forward to enjoying the experience and giving his best on the field. Woodbridge, coached by Ryan Brucker, finished 21-10 overall. Namgoong is still deciding on his college plans.
