Sports Physicals: Protecting Young Athletes Before the Season

A sports physical (pre-participation physical evaluation) is a key step before your child joins a sport. More than just paperwork, it ensures their overall health, safety, and readiness for the season.
Why Sports Physicals Matter:
Spot hidden health issues – Detect concerns like heart murmurs, asthma, or muscle imbalances before they cause problems.
Provide medical clearance – Required by most schools and leagues to confirm safe participation.
Update vaccines & screenings – Keep immunizations current while checking vision and hearing for peak performance.
Prevent & manage injuries – Review past injuries, discuss recovery, and learn warm-up/stretch routines to reduce risks.
Build healthy habits – Teach kids to speak up about fatigue or discomfort and reinforce long-term wellness.

IRC Nears Eradication of Invasive Yellow Star Thistle in Orange County

The Irvine Ranch Conservancy (IRC) has made major strides in removing the invasive yellow star thistle, a plant that threatens local ecosystems and increases wildfire risk.
Once widespread in areas like Gypsum Canyon Wilderness and Weir Canyon, this spiny, fast-spreading weed has now declined dramatically thanks to targeted treatments such as hand-pulling, herbicide use, and ongoing monitoring.
Many infested sites have seen no regrowth for multiple years, native plants are returning, and this year IRC managed the workload without outside contractors.
Community members can support these efforts by joining upcoming volunteer opportunities at letsgooutside.org.

We will resume with the high school music calendar events when the schedule is available for the fall semester.
