What to Do If You Encounter—or Are Bitten by—a Rattlesnake

Rattlesnake encounters increase during warmer months, but bites are rare and rarely fatal. The most important thing is prevention—stay alert, keep your distance, and never provoke a snake—and if bitten, focus on staying calm and getting medical help quickly.
🐍 How to recognize a rattlesnake
Triangular-shaped head
Spotted body
Distinctive rattling tail
🚫 What NOT to do if bitten
Don’t cut the wound or try to suck out venom
Don’t use snakebite kits or suction devices
Don’t apply ice
Don’t give alcohol, caffeine, or medications
Don’t use electric shock
✅ What TO do
Stay calm
Get to a hospital as soon as possible
Sit or rest; keep the bite below heart level
Call 911 when you have service
Lightly wrap and immobilize the area if needed
🏥 What happens next
Doctors assess symptoms and may give antivenom
Observation typically lasts 4–6 hours (or longer if severe)
🌿 Prevention tips
Stay aware on trails and avoid tall grass or hidden areas
Wear sturdy shoes and long pants
Keep a safe distance from any snake
Never tease or handle a rattlesnake
📝 Quick note
Do NOT try to capture or identify the snake—treatment is the same for all rattlesnake species
Nonvenomous bites can be cleaned and bandaged like a puncture wound

From Monarchs to Ringlets: Meet the Butterflies Bringing OC to Life

Butterflies play a vital role in Orange County’s ecosystems by pollinating plants and supporting biodiversity, while also adding beauty to local landscapes.
Species like the Monarch (known for migration and milkweed dependence), Bernardino Blue (relies on buckwheat in coastal habitats), Sara Orangetip (early spring flier), and Common Ringlet (grassland species that thrives in wet conditions) can be found across Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks.
With butterfly populations facing challenges, groups like Irvine Ranch Conservancy are working to protect habitats.

Cook, Create & Taste: Spring Culinary Camp Now Open for Ages 6–11

The Spring Culinary Camp at the Irvine Fine Arts Center is now open to kids ages 6–11, offering a fun, hands-on experience where young chefs learn to make healthy, seasonal dishes like spring rolls, quiche, and focaccia sandwiches. With fresh ingredients in season, the camp helps build cooking skills and confidence while introducing new flavors.
