Irvine Approves $20 Million Purchase for City's First Homeless Shelter
Irvine officials have taken the first steps toward creating the city's first homeless shelter by approving the $20 million purchase of two adjacent buildings in the Irvine Business Complex. The shelter, called "The Sanctuary," will offer beds, medical care, and case management. The project is part of a larger initiative called "The System," which aims to address homelessness by also adding transitional housing and expanding the city's crisis response program. While some council members raised concerns about the rushed purchase and lack of community input, the project is moving forward, with the city set to close on the purchase and search for an operator next month.
Join the Thanksgiving Herb Basket Workshop at the Great Park on November 9
Create a fresh and vibrant herb basket for your kitchen with the Thanksgiving Herb Basket workshop at the Great Park on Saturday, November 9, from 10:30โ11:30 a.m. Hosted by the Farm + Food Lab, this demonstration teaches you how to incorporate fresh herbs into your fall meals. No supplies are needed, just come to watch and learn. Registration is required, so sign up soon at cityofirvine.org/yourirvine.
Nutrition That Saves Lives: How Park-It Market Keeps 2,500 Seniors Healthy Each Month
Second Harvest's Park-It Market helps combat senior food insecurity by serving about 2,500 adults over 60 each month. Proper nutrition is essential for seniors to maintain muscle mass, prevent falls, and aid digestion, as thirst and appetite decline with age. Skipping meals can lead to health risks, but a nutritious diet supports healthier, more independent lives. With 7 million seniors potentially facing food insecurity by 2050, immediate action is neededโcurrently, 668,000 seniors in California are already food insecure. You can support by hosting a Virtual Food Drive: https://heyor.ca/7Ypdrf.
Traffic Alert: One-Way Only on Cadence Oct. 24-25 for Major Bike Lane Upgrades
Cadence between Radial and Chinon will have one-way traffic from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on October 24 and 25 due to slurry seal operations. This is part of a project to add a Class IV protected bikeway, offering physical separation between cyclists and drivers, which is expected to be completed next month.
Stay Safe This Halloween: Follow IPD's Top Trick-or-Treating Guidelines
With Halloween approaching, the Irvine Police Department (IPD) offers key safety tips for students and families.
Always accompany children during trick-or-treating, choose bright or reflective costumes for visibility, and carry a flashlight or glow sticks.
Avoid masks that obstruct vision, and drivers should watch for kids and drive slowly.
Inspect all candy and avoid eating anything not commercially wrapped or tampered with.
If you see anything suspicious, call 9-1-1.
For more details, visit the IPD Crime Prevention Website or call their non-emergency line at 949-724-7000.
Safely Dispose of Unused Medications: Take Back Day at Irvine Locations on October 26
Safely dispose of unused prescriptions during National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, October 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Irvine Police Department is participating, offering drop-off locations at the Irvine Police Department (1 Civic Center Plaza) and Hoag Health Center (16105 Sand Canyon Avenue). Help keep the community safe by responsibly discarding expired or unneeded medications.
Help Inner-City Kids Experience Nature and Science
Sea and Sage Audubon is raising funds to cover bus trips that bring inner-city schoolchildren to a freshwater wetland for hands-on science learning and environmental education. So far, $3,250 of the $4,200 goal has been raised to fund 14 trips this fall. They are seeking additional donations to reach their goal. Contributions of any amount are welcome, and checks can be made out to Sea and Sage Audubon and sent to the School Bus Fund at 5 Riparian View, Irvine, CA 92612.
