Stay Healthy This Winter: Essential Tips for Cold and Flu Season
Cold and flu season hits hardest during the winter months, especially for seniors and those with chronic health conditions. People over 65 account for a large percentage of flu-related hospitalizations and deaths due to weakened immune systems and higher susceptibility to complications like pneumonia and bronchitis.
To stay healthy:
Practice Proper Handwashing
Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Scrub all parts of your hands, including under the nails and between fingers.Avoid Close Contact with Sick Individuals
Minimize exposure to sick people, especially if you’re older, have chronic health conditions, or care for vulnerable individuals.Use Hand Sanitizers and Disinfectants
When soap and water aren’t available, use hand sanitizers with at least 60% alcohol. Disinfect frequently touched surfaces, including your smartphone.Stay Home When You’re Sick
Rest and recover at home to avoid spreading illness to others and speeding up your own recovery.Flu Shots
The best time is October or November, but it’s beneficial at any point during flu season.Eat a Healthy Diet and Exercise Regularly
Strengthen your immune system with balanced nutrition and regular physical activity.Seek Medical Attention When Needed
If flu symptoms worsen or last beyond a week, consult a healthcare provider to prevent complications like pneumonia.
