What to Know Before Taking Dietary Supplements, According to UCI Health

Dietary supplements are commonly used by many Americans, but health experts say they are not always necessary and may sometimes carry risks. UCI Health neurologist Dr. Brian Hitt advises patients to be cautious as, especially when products do not clearly list all ingredients or are not being used to treat a known deficiency. He also noted that even when supplements are not harmful, they may not always provide significant benefits, which is why many healthcare providers suggest consulting a doctor before use.

Keeping Cats Healthy: How to Spot and Manage Weight Gain

Maintaining a healthy weight is an important part of a cat’s overall well-being and quality of life. Extra weight can increase the risk of health concerns such as diabetes, arthritis, and heart disease, while also affecting comfort, energy levels, and playfulness. Regular veterinary checkups, along with simple observations at home, can help pet owners identify weight changes early and support their cat’s long-term health.
Key Signs a Cat May Be Overweight:
It may be difficult to feel the cat’s ribs, or they may only be noticeable with firm pressure
The cat’s waistline may appear less defined, with little or no slight inward curve above the hips
The cat may seem less active, playful, or energetic than usual
A veterinarian may notice gradual weight gain during routine wellness visits
Helpful Ways to Support a Healthy Weight:
Schedule a veterinary appointment for a professional weight assessment and personalized guidance
Encourage regular play with two 15-minute interactive sessions each day using toys or climbing activities
Consider a veterinarian-recommended weight management cat food if advised
Limit treats and offer human food only occasionally and in small amounts
Continue regular weigh-ins and follow-up visits to monitor progress
