Speed Limits Reduced on 56 Irvine Streets Following Citywide Review

The Irvine City Council has approved a series of speed limit changes following a review of 120 roadways throughout the city.
Speed limits will be reduced on 56 street segments, most commonly by 5 mph and by up to 10 mph in certain areas, while 27 additional streets will receive speed limits where none previously existed.
Two segments along Bosque will see increased limits to encourage use as a connector roadway and to reduce traffic on nearby residential streets.
The changes are authorized under a 2022 state law and are intended to improve safety for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists.
Woodbridge High Wins County Academic Decathlon Championship, Advances to State

Woodbridge High School’s Academic Decathlon Team claimed the Orange County championship, marking its ninth title in the past 10 years with a first-place score of 46,949.3 points.
The Warriors will advance to the state competition in Santa Clara from March 19–22.
Individually, Henry Robbins led the Honor Division with the highest overall score of 9,310.8 out of 10,000.
University High School also had a strong showing, finishing third overall with 44,187.5 points.
Great Park Community Meeting Invites Public to Explore New Developments

The City of Irvine is hosting a free Great Park Community Meeting on March 2, from 4–6 p.m. at The Canopy construction site, giving residents an up-close look at current and upcoming Great Park development. Attendees can walk the site, learn about key projects—including The Canopy, Northern Sector/Perimeter Park, Cultural Terrace, Lakes, and the future Library. Residents can speak directly with City staff, the City Manager, the Great Park Director, and the development team.
Longtime Irvine Spectrum Landmark Set for a New Look

The Giant Wheel at Irvine Spectrum Center, a recognizable landmark since 2002, is being replaced with a new, larger version set to open this summer. The current Italian-built wheel has long been a visual marker for visitors and a familiar part of the center’s identity. The new 132-foot wheel, also built in Italy, will feature updated technology including built-in speakers in each gondola and enhanced LED lighting capable of displaying a wide range of patterns and seasonal light shows.

Irvine Public Library Launches After School Club for Grades 4–8

The club meets at both Heritage Park and University Park Libraries, with varying days and times. Students can drop in, get creative, and connect with friends.

Artificial Sweetener Consumption Associated With Increased Cardiovascular Risk

An observational study published in The British Medical Journal found that higher consumption of artificial sweeteners is associated with increased risks of cardiovascular disease and stroke. While the study does not establish causation, UCI Health cardiologists say the findings support limiting artificial sweeteners as part of a heart-healthy diet.
The NutriNet-Santé study followed 100,000+ French adults for about nine years.
High consumers of artificial sweeteners had a 9% higher risk of cardiovascular disease and an 18% higher risk of stroke compared with non-consumers.
Sweeteners most associated with risk were aspartame, acesulfame potassium, and sucralose.
Researchers adjusted for major lifestyle and health factors, but the study did not prove cause and effect.
Experts recommend limiting artificial sweeteners and prioritizing less processed, whole foods.

Whiskers at Work: How Cats Sense, Explore, and Stay Safe

Cat whiskers aren’t just adorable—they’re powerful sensory tools that help cats “feel” the world. These thick, deeply rooted hairs pick up tiny air movements and vibrations, helping cats navigate in the dark, judge tight spaces, stay balanced, protect their eyes, and even show how they’re feeling. Because whiskers send important information straight to the brain, they should never be cut or pulled, and cats are happiest when their bowls and handling don’t constantly bump or bend them.
