SpaceX Launches 20 Starlink Satellites from Vandenberg Space Force Base

SpaceX successfully launched 20 Starlink internet satellites from Vandenberg Space Force Base in Santa Barbara County on Tuesday night. The mission used a Falcon 9 rocket, marking its fifth flight, having previously supported USSF-62 and three Starlink missions. The Falcon 9, a reusable two-stage rocket, was livestreamed on SpaceX's X account. Starlink is the world's largest satellite constellation in low Earth orbit, providing broadband internet for various online activities. The satellites orbit at about 550 km and connect to user antennas for internet access. This and previous launches have been visible across the skies of Orange County.

UC Irvine Renames Biological Sciences School After $50M Donation from Biotech Pioneer Charlie Dunlop

UC Irvine will rename its biological sciences school after biotech pioneer Charlie Dunlop, following his $50 million donation. The endowment will enhance academics and research, marking a “new era of discovery.” Dunlop, a UC San Diego graduate and founder of Ambry Genetics, credited UC Irvine for contributing to his company's success. Ambry Genetics, known for its public genetic data initiative, was sold in 2017 for up to $1 billion. Previously named after Francisco J. Ayala, the school removed his name in 2018 due to harassment allegations.

Irvine's Dance Showcase: NCI Discovery Celebrates 20 Years of Artistic Excellence

Celebrate two decades of innovation in dance at the National Choreographers Initiative (NCI) 20th anniversary. This year, Artistic Director Molly Lynch invites four choreographers and 16 professional dancers from ballet companies nationwide for a three-week intensive, culminating in a public performance featuring four new ballets. Since its founding in 2004, NCI has engaged 76 choreographers (31 women) and 169 dancers from 54 national companies, with 33 pieces premiered by major companies. The 2024 choreographers include Charles Askegard, Cherice Barton, DaYoung Jung, and Donna Salgado.

Irvine's Track Stars Josh Farmer and Max Daniels Recognized for Academic Excellence

Senior Josh Farmer and junior Max Daniels were named to the CSC Men's Track & Field Academic All-District Team. Farmer, a three-time All-American and 2024 Big West decathlon champion, finished 12th at the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a personal record of 7,703 points, qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Trials. He recently graduated with a master's in demographic and social analysis. Daniels placed third in the Big West decathlon and set a personal record of 7,435 points, ranking fifth all-time at UC Irvine. He is majoring in sociology. To qualify for the CSC honor, athletes must be sophomores or higher with a minimum 3.5 GPA and rank in the top-50 in their region.

Tomlinson and Grove: Irvine Valley's Top Athletes of 2023-24

Irvine Valley's athletes of the year for 2023-24 are Makena Tomlinson from women's basketball and Nick Grove from men's tennis. Tomlinson, a sophomore, averaged 12.1 points and 10.1 rebounds per game, helping the Lasers achieve a 21-8 overall record and second place in the Orange Empire Conference. She was named second-team all-state. Grove, a freshman, led the men's tennis team to an Orange Empire Conference title, So. Cal. Playoffs semifinals, and a third-place state finish. Grove and his teammate Luciano Pardo won the 3C2A doubles state title, and Grove was ranked fourth in singles in the state. Additional awards, including scholar athletes of the year, team of the year, and coach of the year, will be announced soon.

Irvine Officers Discover Stolen Property and Drugs During Routine Stop

Irvine Spectrum Officers stopped a car with three individuals; the driver possessed a powerful magnet used to defeat retail security, one passenger had a no-bail warrant and narcotics, and the second passenger had narcotics. They discovered stolen retail property, and all three were arrested and booked at Orange County Jail.
