UCI Research Highlights Postpartum Depression Link to Pollution, Calls for Public Health Measures

A study from the University of California, Irvine links long-term exposure to air pollution before and after childbirth to a higher risk of postpartum depression in mothers, which can also negatively affect their infants' development. The research, involving over 340,000 women, found that pollutants like ozone and fine particulate matter are particularly harmful during late pregnancy and postpartum. Vulnerable demographics include mothers aged 25-34, African American or Hispanic women, those with higher education, and underweight individuals. The findings aim to improve public health interventions, such as the use of air filters or masks for at-risk groups. The study is part of UCI's broader efforts to enhance community health and wellness, supported by its Brilliant Future campaign and its role as a top-ranked public university and major local employer.
Advancing Health Care: UCI's New Nursing School Building Promises Innovative Learning and Research Opportunities

UC Irvine Athlete Jenika Davis Finds Donor, Sparks Hope for Leukemia Patients

A UCI college soccer player from San Diego, Jenika Davis, is fighting a rare leukemia and needed a bone marrow transplant. After a year-long search with the help of Be the Match, a donor was found. Now in remission, Davis is using her experience to inspire others to join the bone marrow registry. Despite undergoing chemotherapy, she's grateful for everyday things and has become an advocate for the cause. At a recent UC Irvine vs. UC San Diego match, the event doubled as a drive for Be the Match, highlighting Davis' journey and encouraging attendees to register as donors with a quick cheek swab. Davis' story is a testament to the importance of donor registration and the impact it can have on those battling life-threatening conditions.

UC Irvine Defeats No. 1 Seed Fullerton 1-0, Advances to Big West Final for Third Consecutive Year

UC Irvine's women's soccer team reached the Big West Final for the third consecutive year by defeating top-seeded Cal State Fullerton 1-0. Despite a slow start with Fullerton dominating, UCI turned aggressive in the second half, leading to Erin Covey's decisive goal. UCI's defense was strong, limiting Fullerton to one second-half shot. Goalkeeper Glo Hinojosa recorded her eighth shutout of the season. Covey scored her third goal of the year, and Emilie Castagna earned her third assist. UCI has a 6-0-1 record in the last three Big West Championships and has won five consecutive away matches. Gianna Creighton set a new program record with her 83rd career start.
UCI Settles Score with Aggies in Nail-Biting Finish

UC Irvine defeated UC Davis in a close five-set volleyball match (25-22, 25-22, 8-25, 20-25, 15-10), evening out their Big West standings at 6-7. Ella Gardiner led UCI with 10 kills and six blocks, contributing to the win that avenged an earlier season loss to the Aggies. Despite the loss, UC Davis outperformed in stats, leading in blocks, aces, hitting percentage, and digs. Notable performances included Nicole Feliciano's 12th double-double of the season and Amara Aimufua's match-high 13 kills for UC Davis. UCI will next face UC Riverside on the road.
UC Irvine Men's Golf Secures Top-10 Finish at Kapolei Invitational

The UC Irvine men's golf team finished their fall season with a strong performance at the Kapolei Invitational, tying for sixth place at 38-under par. Senior Darien Zhao and freshman Jason Tang led the team, both tying for 19th place. Loyola Marymount won the tournament, with their player Trevor Algya taking the individual title. UC Irvine looks forward to resuming play in February at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in California.
UC Irvine Set to Challenge UCLA's Undefeated Streak and Eye Big West Title

UC Irvine's water polo team, ranked 6th, aims to disrupt UCLA's undefeated season and claim their first Big West regular season title since 2000 in upcoming games against UCLA and Cal State Fullerton. UCI has its highest season ranking and is looking to secure its first winning season in conference play since 2017. They face an undefeated UCLA team they previously scored 15 goals against, the most UCLA has conceded this season. Following this, they play Cal State Fullerton, a team without a league win this season. UCI's Luka Krstic leads the conference in goals and points, while the team boasts strong defensive stats with leaders in field blocks and steals.
