UCI Health has opened the new Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and Ambulatory Care building in Irvine, part of the $1.3 billion UCI Health — Irvine medical complex. This new facility triples the advanced healthcare services available to cancer patients in Orange County. RSI Dream Communities Launches $100M Initiative to Provide Affordable Housing for Essential Workers in Orange County

The rising cost of living is pushing essential middle-income workers out of Orange County. RSI Dream Communities, founded by philanthropist Ron Simon, aims to provide workforce housing for public servants like nurses and teachers. Backed by $100 million, Simon appointed Jim Palmer, former CEO of OC Rescue Mission, as CEO. Palmer, who sees this as an extension of his work with the unhoused, emphasizes the need to support communities by offering affordable housing near employers. Despite the stigma around affordable housing, Simon and Palmer are committed to educating neighborhoods and overcoming challenges. Leveraging Simon’s experience in homebuilding, RSI Dream Communities plans to bypass bureaucratic delays by using private funds and partnering with local employers to address the severe shortage of affordable housing, especially in OC's healthcare sector.

Understanding Prickly Heat: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments

Prickly heat, also known as heat rash, occurs when sweat gets trapped under the skin due to clogged sweat glands, often in warm temperatures. It's common in children due to their developing sweat glands. The rash appears red with small raised spots, itching, mild swelling, and sometimes pustules. It commonly affects the chest, neck, shoulders, and face. For babies, affected areas include the face, arms, legs, and diaper area.

Treatments involve keeping the area dry, avoiding skin products that block pores, using mild soap, and ensuring a cool environment. At-home remedies include cold compresses, breathable clothing, avoiding sun exposure, and OTC products like calamine lotion and hydrocortisone cream. Medical help is necessary if symptoms worsen or if signs of heat stroke appear.

Prevention includes cool showers, moisture-wicking clothes, staying hydrated, and avoiding perfumed skincare products. If symptoms persist, visit an urgent care clinic for assistance.

Cooper’s Hawks: The Stealthy Hunters Thriving in Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks

The Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks host diverse wildlife, including the year-round resident Cooper's hawk, a medium-sized bird of prey common in Southern California. Identifiable by their crow-like size, short rounded wings, elongated heads, and distinctive long tails with black and white tips, these hawks are skilled hunters, preying mainly on smaller birds like doves and pigeons. Adapted to urban areas, they are often seen in backyards near bird feeders. Found across North America, Cooper's hawks thrive in various habitats, including woodlands and wetlands.

The Irvine Ranch Conservancy (IRC) protects these hawks by closing off areas during nesting season and monitoring nests to track population trends, which currently show a thriving Cooper's hawk population. Keep an eye out for these remarkable birds on your next visit to the Landmarks!

National Choreographers Initiative Celebrates 20 Years with Spectacular Ballet Showcase

Season tickets for the 2024-25 UC Irvine men's basketball season are now available. The Anteaters, who had a historic 13-0 home record last season and secured their seventh Big West title in 10 years, are offering season tickets at a 40% discount. Benefits include guaranteed seating, exclusive events, a season ticket holder gift, and more. Discounts are available for UC Irvine faculty, staff, retirees, and recent graduates. Fans can customize their seating and purchase tickets online or by calling the Bren Events Center Box Office. Join in to support the Anteaters this season!

12 Anteaters Honored on ACWPC All-Academic Team

The Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches honored 12 Anteaters on their All-Academic Team, recognizing the program's 3.20 team GPA. To qualify, athletes needed a GPA above 3.20, and their coach had to be an ACWPC member. Four Anteaters earned Outstanding status (GPA 4.00-3.71): Jensine Bugelli, Marilynn Hassett, Brooke Hourigan, and Gabby Norris. Superior status (GPA 3.70-3.41) was achieved by Vivian Bailey, Kennedy East, Lauren Hett, and Annabelle Mundelius. Excellent honors (GPA 3.40-3.20) went to Jordan Frost, Maja Layden, Madi O'Hara, and Faith Tedesco.

From Georgia to Irvine: Jackson Jennings Commits to IVC Basketball

Irvine Valley athletics welcomes 6-3 shooting guard Jackson Jennings to the men's basketball team. Jennings, an all-state player from Greenbrier High in Georgia, is known for his defense, shooting, and work ethic. Coaches Jason Garey and Jerry Hernandez are excited for the 2024-25 season with Jennings, who joins an IVC team that had a 17-12 record and made the So. Cal. Regional Playoffs last season.

Police Arrest Man at Del Taco with Illegal Items Including Stun Gun and Meth

A man causing a disturbance at Del Taco off Lake Forest was found with a purse containing a stun gun, meth, and a meth pipe. He was arrested and booked at Orange County Jail due to an outstanding warrant, and the items were booked into evidence.
