Quick Response and Teamwork Help Save Child in Irvine Pool Emergency

Irvine Police Department officers helped save a child who was found unconscious and unresponsive at the bottom of an apartment complex swimming pool earlier this month. Three officers worked together to perform CPR until the child regained a heartbeat and began breathing independently. The child was taken to CHOC and was released a few days later after making a full recovery.

IUSD Hosts Ask A Scientist/Engineer Night September 16

Irvine Unified School District will host its annual Ask A Scientist/Engineer Night on Wednesday, September 16, from 5:30–7 p.m. at the IUSD Learning Center. Students in grades 6–12 can meet one-on-one with STEM professionals for 10–15 minute consultations to get advice on science fair ideas. STEM professionals are also invited to volunteer and share their expertise with students.

Woodbridge Celebrates Labor Day with Sandcastles, Music and Snow Cones

Celebrate Labor Day with fun in the sun at the North Lake Beach Club on Monday, September 7, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Woodbridge residents can enjoy music throughout the day, with a free Sandcastle Contest from noon to 2 p.m. Bring your sand toys, gather a team, and get creative for a chance to win prizes. From noon to 2 p.m., the first 150 residents can also enjoy free snow cones.

Tastea Celebrates Back-to-School With $2 Off Specialteas

Tastea is offering $2 off Specialteas from 2–5 p.m. through August 26. Customers can redeem the offer through the Tastea Rewards App. Relax and enjoy an afternoon treat as the new school year gets underway!

Staying Cool at School: IUSD Modifies Activities During This Week’s Heat

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Orange County, including Irvine, from Tuesday, August 25 through Friday, August 28.

  • IUSD will modify outdoor activities as needed, including moving PE or recess indoors, reducing strenuous activities, encouraging shade and hydration, and adjusting high school athletics.

  • Families should watch for updates from coaches and remind students to drink plenty of water and wear light, loose-fitting clothing and hats outdoors.

  • All IUSD schools are air-conditioned, and families with school-specific questions can contact their school directly.

UCI Health Doctor Shares Information About Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are enlarged, raised veins that most often appear in the legs, ankles and feet, and they affect nearly 30% of adults. UCI Health vascular surgeon Dr. Isabella Kuo notes that there are currently no FDA-approved over-the-counter medications specifically for treating varicose veins, but healthy lifestyle changes may help manage symptoms. Varicose veins are generally not life-threatening, but anyone experiencing ongoing or concerning symptoms may wish to speak with a healthcare professional about appropriate treatment options.

Join a beginner-friendly Hiking 101 at Buck Gully Reserve on Monday, September 7, from 9–11:30 a.m. This guided, 2-mile Level 2 hike will cover hiking basics such as choosing the right gear, packing properly, setting hiking goals, managing trail risks, and practicing good trail etiquette.

Enjoy an evening of live music at Irvine Spectrum Center near H&M, with weekend entertainment offered Thursday through Sunday from 5:30–8:30 p.m. The most upcoming event is on Thursday, August 27, featuring Avery Brostrom.

Happy Tails: 23 Irvine Shelter Pets Find New Homes

From August 17–23, the Irvine Animal Care Center celebrated 23 adoptions, including 3 dogs, 17 cats, 2 guinea pigs, and 1 rabbit finding new homes. The center also sent two cats to rescue organizations and reunited five dogs with their owners.

UC Irvine Men’s Soccer Earns First Win of 2026 With 3-1 Victory Over LMU

UC Irvine men’s soccer earned its first win of the 2026 season with a 3-1 victory over LMU. The win extended UCI’s home unbeaten streak to 17 matches, and the Anteaters will next visit Pacific on Sunday, August 30.
