Common Sleep Problems and Practical Ways to Get Better Rest

Sleep problems can come from everyday habits, physical discomfort, stress, or sleep disorders. UCI Health sleep specialist Dr. Rami Khayat offers several practical ways to improve sleep quality and make it easier to get back to sleep after nighttime awakenings.
Stay active: A 30–45-minute walk or other light to moderate exercise a few hours before bedtime may help your body relax and prepare for sleep.
Ease restless legs: Gentle exercise, stretching, massage, or a warm bath before bed may help reduce discomfort.
Keep a regular sleep schedule: Try to go to bed and wake up around the same time each day.
Limit caffeine and alcohol: Avoid them close to bedtime, as they may interfere with restful sleep.
Take a break if you can’t sleep: If you are still awake after about 20 minutes, consider getting up and doing something relaxing, such as reading or meditating.
Put electronics away: Bright screens, phones, and video games can make it harder to fall back asleep.
Avoid checking the clock: Watching the time during the night may make it more difficult to relax.
Prepare for tomorrow: Before bed, take a few moments to organize your thoughts, tasks, or concerns so they are less likely to keep you awake.
