Kidney Disease in Cats: Symptoms, Causes and the Importance of Early Screening

Kidney disease is common in cats, especially as they get older, and early detection can make a major difference in managing the condition. Regular veterinary exams, blood work, and urine testing can help identify kidney problems sooner and allow treatment or dietary changes to begin before the disease progresses.
Common causes: Dehydration, age-related changes, certain medications, congenital conditions, toxins, ibuprofen, antifreeze, and some lilies.
Signs to watch for: Changes in drinking or urination, vomiting, loss of appetite, lethargy, stumbling, mouth ulcers, unusual breath, or blood in the urine.
Early screening matters: Annual lab work is generally recommended for cats age 7 and older to establish a baseline and monitor changes in kidney function.
Treatment and care: Treatment depends on the cause and severity of the kidney problem. While some conditions may improve with veterinary care, others can often be managed with medications, dietary changes, supplements, and regular monitoring.
