Irvine Family Turns Volunteering Into a Tradition Passed Down Through Three Generations

In Irvine, giving back is a tradition that spans three generations for the Mossbarger-Starr family. Inspired by her parents’ long history of service, Kate Starr now serves on the board of Families Forward, a nonprofit that helps families in housing crises.
Founded in 1984, Families Forward supports 300–400 families each month through community-driven efforts.
The next Family Volunteer Night is Sept. 25; details are available at families-forward.org or 949-552-2727.

Swim Smart: Ways to Stay Safe in the Water

Swimming and water activities are fun for all ages, but safety should always come first. Even in shallow water, accidents can happen quickly and quietly. UCI Health’s Dr. Isabel Algaze Gonzalez shares a few easy ways to make every swim safer:
Teach children (and adults) basic swimming skills.
Supervise closely — stay within arm’s reach for young swimmers.
Install pool fences and block unsupervised access.
Avoid alcohol when supervising, swimming, or boating.
Learn CPR and keep rescue gear nearby.
Wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets in open water.
For diving, get medical clearance, dive with a buddy, and prepare for hazards.
In emergencies, call for trained help and throw flotation devices rather than attempting risky rescues.

Owls Spotted Near South Lake in Woodbridge

Recently, some Irvine residents spotted owls around Woodbridge South Lake, offering an exciting glimpse of local wildlife. These nocturnal birds, known for their keen eyesight and silent flight, were seen perched near the water’s edge and in nearby trees. We’d love to hear about your owl sightings or other wildlife encounters — share your story with us, and we can feature your adventure for everyone to enjoy.

Sweet Summer Treat: No-Bake Strawberry Semifreddo Recipe
![]() | ![]() |
Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County is sharing a refreshing summer recipe — a no-bake Strawberry Semifreddo by Chef Tony Esnault of Knife Pleat in Costa Mesa. Featured in their Summer newsletter, the dessert celebrates sweet seasonal strawberries and is perfect for cooling off in warm weather. It’s also a fun, family-friendly activity to make together at home.
We will resume with the high school music calendar events when the schedule is available for the fall semester.

6 Hidden Household Triggers That Could Make Pets Itchy

A pet’s itchy skin may be linked to common items found around the home. From grooming supplies to hidden allergens, several everyday factors can trigger irritation. Possible sources include:
Shampoos & Grooming Products – Certain formulas contain fragrances or harsh ingredients that can dry out or irritate skin.
Environmental Allergens – Seasonal pollen or grass in spring and fall may cause allergic reactions.
Carpet & Cleaning Products – Residue from carpet cleaners, sprays, or laundry detergents can irritate paws and bellies.
Dust & Dust Mites – Common household allergens that may lead to redness and itching, especially on the face and feet.
Insects & Parasites – Fleas, mites, and tiny ants can cause scratching even from just one bite.
Food Ingredients – Sensitivities to foods such as chicken are possible; veterinarians may recommend an elimination diet to identify the cause.

UC Irvine Honors Top Student-Athletes for Excellence On and Off the Field

UC Irvine’s Noah Zamora (men’s tennis) and Suus de Bakker (women’s soccer) have been named the school’s 2024-25 Big West Scholar-Athletes of the Year for excellence in competition, academics, and community service.
Zamora, a business economics graduate and four-time all-conference pick, helped lead UCI to multiple championships, earned the 2025 Big West Player of the Year honor, and set program-best records while serving on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
De Bakker, also a business economics major, has been key to three straight Big West titles and two NCAA Sweet Sixteen runs, contributing both offensively and defensively. Despite injuries, she has maintained top academic honors and returns for a graduate season.

The Timberwolves bring back four starters on offense and four on defense, including standout lineman Jacob Harper, receivers Isaac Kwon and Jack Schultz, and linebacker Enoch Choi.
A quarterback competition featuring Dylan D’Epifanio will be decided on Aug. 18.
Terry’s focus is on effort, discipline, strong tackling, and teamwork, supported by a staff with five former head coaches.
We will resume with the high school athletic calendar events when the schedule is available for the fall semester.
