How to Improve Sleep Habits and Know When to Seek Help

Occasional trouble falling asleep is something many people experience, but when sleepless nights become frequent and begin affecting your energy, focus, or mood during the day, it may be a sign of insomnia. UCI Health sleep expert Dr. KyoungBin Im explains that insomnia can include difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up too early—even when you have enough time to rest.
Tips for Better Sleep:
Maintain a regular sleep schedule each day
Get regular exercise and morning sunlight
Eat a balanced diet and drink alcohol in moderation
Keep your bedroom mainly for sleep and rest
Avoid eating, reading, watching TV, or using your phone while in bed
Practice deep breathing or meditation to help relax before bedtime
Avoid long naps or spending extra time in bed after a poor night’s sleep
When to Consider Seeing a Doctor:
Sleep problems happen at least three nights a week
Symptoms continue for three months or longer
You feel tired, unfocused, or irritable during the day
Sleep issues may be connected to conditions such as anxiety, sleep apnea, heart concerns, or depression
