From Dance to Travel, Irvine Teens Create Apps Designed to Help Others

Two Irvine teens, Chenxi Huang and Kelley Gou, have been named global semifinalists in the Technovation Girls competition for creating apps that use technology to address accessibility challenges. Huang developed Chorify, which pairs an app with a 3D-printed wristband to help deaf and hard-of-hearing people experience dance through movement tracking and beat-based vibrations. Gou created Walk With Me, an AI-powered app designed to help visually impaired users navigate their surroundings, plan trips by voice and organize travel information. Both teens said their volunteer experiences inspired them to develop technology that could help make everyday activities more accessible and independent.

Simple everyday habits can make a positive difference in how you feel. Getting enough sleep, eating well, staying active and taking a little time to be mindful can all help support mental well-being. UCI Health psychiatrist Dr. Robert McCarron suggests that when you’re feeling anxious, try taking just 60 seconds to slow down, focus on your breathing and notice how you’re feeling. This short moment of mindfulness can help bring your attention back to the present.
