$20 Million Boost Brings Marine Corps Aviation History to Irvine’s Great Park

Forty Marine Corps aircraft are returning to Irvine as part of a $20 million grant awarded to the Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum to establish a new facility in Irvine’s Great Park. The grant includes $2.5 million for transporting the aircraft from Miramar to the park, formerly Marine Corps Air Station El Toro. The museum, set to open in 2026, will feature immersive exhibits and educational programs celebrating Marine Corps aviation history.

UC Irvine Expands Electric Bus Fleet with Five New ZX5 Battery Electric Buses from PhoenixEV

UC Irvine expanded its all-electric bus fleet in May with five new 40-foot ZX5 battery electric buses from PhoenixEV. UC Irvine has operated an electric fleet since January 2018, making it the first U.S. university to do so. The fleet has grown to 25 buses, covering over 1.18 million miles. The buses are charged via a state-of-the-art microgrid at a cost of $0.37 per mile, significantly cheaper than diesel. PhoenixEV, proud of their partnership with UC Irvine, specializes in electric drive systems and heavy-duty transit buses.

Summer Concerts Kick Off at Mike Ward Community Park with Free Family Fun

Enjoy free summer concerts at Mike Ward Community Park—Woodbridge with "Summer in the City." Live music performances start at 5:30 p.m. on select Saturdays, offering a family-friendly atmosphere. New Exhibition at Langson IMCA Celebrates California’s Summertime Bliss

UC Irvine’s Langson Institute and Museum of California Art's new exhibition, "Picturing Summer," opens July 20 and runs through September 20, showcasing 31 paintings from the late 19th to mid-20th century, supplemented by five works from private collections. Curated by Susan Davidson, the exhibition is divided into five sections—“Leisurely Days,” “Sun and Sand,” “Off the Beaten Path,” “On the Water,” and “Coastal Living”—each highlighting various summertime activities and landscapes in California, from verdant meadows and beaches to mountainous regions and coastal villages.

12 dogs, 18 cats, and 1 rabbit found new homes! Adopted dogs include Agave, Ash, Everett, Jade, Meadow, Misty, Mo, Rainier, Sam, Spokane, Tyler, and Woodruff. Adopted cats are Buddy, Cherry, Coal, Cobbler, Conch, Grasshopper, Juneau, Martini, Peach, Pebble, Puccini, Ravioli, Ricotta, Riggs, Roquefort, Tangelo, Vinaigrette, and Yuzu. The rabbit Pepsi was also adopted. Additionally, 3 dogs and 2 cats were reunited with their owners.

UC Irvine Water Polo Star Tara Prentice Aims for Olympic Gold in Paris

Tara Prentice, UC Irvine's all-time leading scorer in women’s water polo, is set to play center for the U.S. team at the Paris Olympics, aiming for a historic fourth consecutive gold medal. Guided by her mother's mantra, "You can and you will," Prentice overcame previous setbacks, including missing the cut for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Her strength lies in her commitment to teamwork and helping others, qualities praised by Team USA coach Adam Krikorian. Proudly representing UCI, Prentice aspires to inspire and perhaps return to Irvine, her "home away from home," to work at UCI in the future.

UC Irvine Celebrates Historic MLB Draft with Four Players Picked in Top 10 Rounds

In the 2024 MLB Draft, a record four UC Irvine Anteaters were picked in the first 10 rounds: Caden Kendle (5th round, Minnesota Twins), Woody Hadeen (6th round, Detroit Tigers), Myles Smith (7th round, Cincinnati Reds), and Dub Gleed (9th round, Miami Marlins). Nick Pinto rounded out the group, being selected in the 19th round by the Chicago White Sox. Kendle, the highest returning collegiate draft pick from 2023, had an impressive season with notable accolades. Hadeen, Smith, and Gleed also achieved significant honors and records, contributing to their draft selections. Pinto capped his college career as UCI's all-time strikeout leader.

Two Arrested for Burglary and Outstanding Warrants After Spectrum Theft Investigation

In June, Spectrum officers investigated a $1,000 theft. On Saturday, officers found the suspect vehicle at Spectrum and, with security, located two suspects. They discarded stolen Prada sunglasses before being caught. Carlos Aldaco, 30, of Los Angeles, was booked for warrants and burglary. Andrews Francisco Catalan, 25, of Lynwood, was arrested for burglary and outstanding warrants.
